Leviticus 13-15 Cleanliness and The Body

Thoughts

Leviticus 13 Leprosy

Diagnosing Skin Diseases

Key signs of uncleanness: The hair in the area has turned white and the spot appears deeper than the skin.

Quarantine: If the spot is white, hair has not turned white, appears no deeper than the skin, then the person is isolated for 7 days.

  • First Re-examination: If the disease has not spread and appears unchanged, the person is isolated another 7 days.
  • Second Re-examination: If the area has faded and still hasn’t spread, it is just a surface eruption.
  • The priest declares the person clean, and the person must wash their clothes.

Chronic Leprosy: If a person has a white swelling with white hair and raw flesh, the condition is chronic and clearly unclean – no isolation

If the disease spreads over the entire body and turns the skin completely white, the person is declared clean (shows signs of healing)

However, raw flesh = unclean (they can still become clean again if heals)

Boils: If a healed boil leaves behind a white swelling or reddish-white spot, it must be shown to a priest for examination. Unclean if deeper than the skin and has white hair. Isolation is needed if unclear.

Burns: If a burn heals and a reddish-white or white spot appears, the person must be shown to a priest. Unclean if hair in the spot has turned white and the spot looks deeper than the skin

Sores in hair: Unclean if it looks deeper than the skin and the hair is yellow and thin, it’s a leprous disease (called an “itch”). Quarantine for 7 days if it’s not deeper, and there’s no black hair. If no spread is seen after 7 days, the person must shave (but not the diseased area) and be isolated again. If the disease is unchanged and black hair grows back, it’s a sign of healing.

Dull white spots are clean

Hair loss: Natural baldness is fine. If a reddish-white spot appears on a bald head or forehead, and it looks like other leprous skin diseases, the man is unclean.

If unclean: tear clothes, keep hair unkempt, cover lower part of face, shout “unclean unclean” and live alone

Garments: Mildew can appear in wool, linen, leather, or woven materials. The priest inspects and isolates the item for 7 days.If the spot spreads, it is unclean. If it does not spread, the item is washed and isolated another 7 days. Burned if still unclean

Leviticus 14 Cleansing Lepers

When someone is healed, they must be brought to the priest:

  • Examination outside the camp to confirm healing.
  • Two clean birds are brought:
    • One is killed over fresh water in a clay pot.
    • The live bird is dipped in the blood and released.
  • The person:
    • Washes clothes
    • Shaves all hair
    • Bathes in water
  • Then they may return to the camp but must stay outside their tent for 7 days.
  • On the 7th day, they shave again, wash clothes, and bathe a second time.

On day 8:
The priest then offers the sin, burnt, and grain offerings to make atonement and declare the person fully clean.

  • 1 male lamb (guilt offering)
  • 1 female lamb (sin offering)
  • 1 male lamb (burnt offering)
  • Grain and oil offerings

The priest uses some of the blood and oil to:

  • Apply it to the person’s right ear, thumb, and big toe (symbolizing full restoration).
  • Sprinkle oil before the Lord 7 times and pour the rest on the person.

The priest then offers offerings to make atonement and declare the person fully clean.

If the person cannot afford the full set of offerings they may bring one lamb and two doves or pigeons instead.

Cleansing Houses:

  • If someone notices signs (e.g., green or red spots), they must report it to a priest and empty the house
  • If the priest sees spots appear deeper than the surface, the house is quarantined for 7 days.
  • After 7 days, the priest returns:
    • If the mold has spread, the infected stones must be removed and thrown outside the city.
    • The walls around the area must be scraped, and the scraped material discarded.
    • New stones and plaster are used to repair the house.

If mold returns: the house is considered defiled. The entire house must be torn down, and the materials discarded outside the camp.

If the mold does not return after repair:

  • The priest performs a cleansing ritual
    • Two birds: one is killed, the other dipped in its blood and released.
    • Cedarwood, hyssop, and scarlet yarn are used
Leviticus 15 Bodily Discharges

Male Discharges
Chronic:

  • A man with an abnormal discharge is unclean.
  • Anything he lies or sits on becomes unclean.
  • Anyone who touches him or his items must:
    • Wash clothes
    • Bathe in water
    • Be unclean until evening
  • Even a clay pot he touches must be broken.

Cleansing Process

  • When the discharge stops:
    • Wait 7 days and wash clothes and body
    • On the 8th day, offer 2 birds (one sin offering, one burnt offering)

Seminal Emission: A man who has a normal emission must bathe and is unclean until evening. If with a woman, both must bathe and are unclean until evening

Female Discharges
 Menstruation

  • A woman on her period is unclean for 7 days
  • Anything she touches, sits, or lies on is unclean and anyone who touches those items must wash and bathe, and is unclean until evening
  • If a man sleeps with her during this time, he becomes unclean for 7 days

 Abnormal Bleeding

  • If bleeding lasts beyond the normal period, she is unclean as long as it continues
  • Same rules apply as with menstruation

 Cleansing After Bleeding Stops

  • After bleeding ends wait 7 days
    • On the 8th day, offer 2 birds (one sin offering, one burnt offering)

Questions

I understand isolating someone who is unclean but not making them shout unclean and look disheveled.

This confuses me: The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, 34 “When you come into the land of Canaan, which I give you for a possession, and I put a case of leprous disease in a house in the land of your possession, 35 then he who owns the house shall come and tell the priest, ‘There seems to me to be some case of disease in my house.’

So did everyone know if you had sex because you would be unclean.

Application

God desires purity from us, but sin has left our bodies broken and unclean and we cannot be holy on our own. These chapters remind us that impurity affects every part of life and requires cleansing outside of ourselves. While 1 Corinthians 6:19 says our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, they can only be truly clean through God. Our perfect high priest has cleansed us from sin and makes us whole. Only through Him can our “temple” be restored and made a place where God dwells.
