Deuteronomy 16

Festival	When	Main Practices	Purpose/Focus
Passover & Feast of Unleavened Bread	Month of Abib	– Sacrifice the Passover lamb at the place God chooses – Eat unleavened bread for seven days – Rest on the seventh day	Remember God’s deliverance from Egypt and His mighty acts.
Feast of Weeks (Shavuot / Pentecost)	Seven weeks after the grain harvest begins	– Offer freewill offerings – Celebrate with joy	Give thanks for the harvest and remember God’s blessings and deliverance.
Feast of Tabernacles (Booths)	Seven days after the final harvest	– Celebrate for seven days at the place God chooses	Celebrate God’s provision and remember His care during Israel’s wilderness journey.

Appoint judges and officials in each town to judge fairly and without partiality or bribery. The phrase “show partiality” literally translates from the Hebrew as “recognize faces” (lo takir panim לֹא תַכִּיר פָּנִים).

Do not plant an Asherah pole or set up a sacred stone beside the altar of the Lord.

Deuteronomy 17

If anyone is found worshiping other gods (sun, moon, stars), it must be thoroughly investigated. If proven true, the person must be stoned (with 2-3 witnesses).

When Israel asks for a king he must be one of their own people 

• The king must not:
  • Have many horses 
  • Take many wives 
  • Have excessive silver and gold 

• The king must:
  • Write for himself a copy of the law 
  • Read it all his life, learning to fear the Lord and obey His commands
  • Stay humble and avoid turning aside from the law

Deuteronomy 18

The Levites don’t receive land as an inheritance as the Lord is their inheritance. They live off the offerings and sacrifices given by the people.

Israel must not imitate the nations by practicing:

• Child sacrifice
• Divination or fortune-telling
• Sorcery, witchcraft, spell-casting
• Consulting mediums or the dead 

These practices are “detestable” to God, and they are part of why the nations are being driven out. Instead, Israel must be blameless.

Verse 15: “The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers—it is to him you shall listen— “
Acts 3:22–23: Peter quotes this verse, saying it refers to Jesus.
Acts 7:37: And Stephen
John 1:45: And Philip
John 5:46 And Jesus!

Do not listen to false prophets . The test of a true prophet: what they proclaim in God’s name must come to pass 

Questions

Is God just saying He knows Israel will ask for a king but he doesn’t condone it? (1 Samuel “They have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me from being king over them”)

Application

These chapters call Israel (and us) to center every part of life, whether it is worship, justice, or leadership, fully on God instead of leaning on our own strength or the ways of the world. It continues the theme we have been seeing: to rely completely on God in every season, during the good (festivals and blessings) and the hard (times of testing, temptation, and struggle). God has given us His Word as our guide and the gift of the Holy Spirit to lead us. While we have the gift of The Prophet, we are still waiting on His return and are called to live faithfully in the meantime.
