Chronicles 9

The Queen of Sheba visits bringing spices, gold, and precious stones. She tests Solomon with hard questions  and he answers them all.

She’s overwhelmed by his wisdom, the splendor of his palace, the food on his table, the clothing of his attendants, and the way his servants minister.

• She blesses the Lord for setting Solomon on the throne, acknowledging God as the source of his success.
  

The Queen gives Solomon 120 talents of gold (~4 tons), spices in abundance, and precious stones. Solomon gives her back whatever she desired, more than she brought

Solomon receives 666 talents of gold per year (~25 tons). Traders, kings, and governors also bring him wealth.

He makes 200 large shields and 300 small shields of beaten gold. He builds an ivory throne overlaid with pure gold, with six steps and twelve lions 

His fleet (with Hiram’s help) brings back gold, silver, ivory, apes, and peacocks every three years. Kings from all nations seek his wisdom, bringing gifts year after year.

Solomon owns 4,000 stalls for horses and chariots, 12,000 horsemen, and rules from the Euphrates River to Egypt.

His acts and wisdom are recorded in the writings of Nathan the prophet, Ahijah the Shilonite, and Iddo the seer.

Chronicles 10

Solmon’s son is now king: Rehoboam. He goes to Shechem where all Israel has gathered to make him king.

• This is  where Abraham first built an altar (Genesis 12:6–7) and where Joshua renewed Israel’s covenant (Joshua 24).

Jeroboam, once one of Solomon’s officials who rebelled and fled to Egypt, returns when he hears of Solomon’s death.

People plead with Rehoboam:
“Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but now lighten the harsh labor and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.”

Rehoboam first consults the older advisers who served Solomon. They tell him to be kind to them.

Rehoboam rejects the elders’ advice and turns to his young friends. They tell him to show power instead. 

The people return three days later, and Rehoboam follows the young men’s advice.

• The text notes: “The king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from the Lord…” (v. 15)

When Israel sees Rehoboam won’t listen, they reject his rule and return home.

Rehoboam sends Hadoram, the overseer of forced labor, to calm the people, but they stone him to death.

The northern tribes break away and form the kingdom of Israel under Jeroboam,while Rehoboam rules Judah in the south.

Chronicles 11

Rehoboam gathers 180,000 troops from Judah and Benjamin to fight against Israel and reunite the kingdom.

God sends the prophet Shemaiah:“You shall not go up or fight against your brothers. Go home, for this thing is from Me.” Rehoboam listens and obeys.

He goes and  strengthens fifteen key cities, including Bethlehem, Etam, Tekoa, Lachish, Azekah, and others. He reinforces each city with commanders, provisions, shields, and spears.

The priests and Levites who had served in the northern kingdom leave their towns and come to Judah and Jerusalem. For three years, they support Rehoboam, who “walked in the ways of David and Solomon.”

Rehoboam takes 18 wives and 60 concubines, producing 28 sons and 60 daughters. His favorite wife is Maacah, granddaughter of Absalom (David’s rebellious son).

Rehoboam appoints Abijah, Maacah’s son, as chief prince and the heir.

Application

Rehoboam’s story is such a real picture of how pride works. He started off prideful trying to prove himself tough and in control, and it completely backfired. The kingdom split, and everything his father had built fell apart overnight. But when God told him to stop fighting and stand down, Rehoboam actually listened. That moment of humility changed everything. God never writes us off when we mess up; He’s just waiting for us to turn back. The sad part is that once things got comfortable again, Rehoboam slipped right back into pride. It’s easy to forget how much we need God when life feels steady.
