Nehemiah 8-10: A New Covenant

Thoughts

Nehemiah 8

The people gather in the square before the Water Gate. They ask Ezra the scribe to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses,  Ezra reads aloud from morning until midday.

The Levites move among the crowd, helping the people understand what is being read. They translate and explain the meaning. The people begin to weep as they realize how far they have strayed from God’s commands.

Nehemiah, Ezra, and the Levites comfort the people, saying, “Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” They remind everyone that the day is holy, set apart for rejoicing, not sorrow.

The next day, the heads of families gather again to study the Law more deeply. They discover the command to celebrate the Feast of Booths (Tabernacles), which had not been observed in this way since Joshua’s time.

The people go out to collect branches and build booths on their rooftops, in courtyards, and in open spaces throughout Jerusalem. Ezra continues to read from the Law every day during the festival.

Timeline (since I get confused between Ezra and Nehemiah)

Event / LeaderApprox. Year
Cyrus’s decree allows Jews to return (Zerubbabel leads first group)538 BC
Temple completed516 BC
Ezra arrives in Jerusalem (7th year of Artaxerxes I)458 BC
Nehemiah arrives in Jerusalem (20th year of Artaxerxes I)445 BC
Ezra and Nehemiah active together~445–433 BC
Nehemiah’s second term as governor (after return to Persia)~432 BC
Nehemiah 9

The people gather on the twenty-fourth day of the same month, after celebrating the Feast of Booths. They come together fasting, wearing sackcloth, and putting dust on their heads

The Levites (Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah) stand on the stairs and lead the people in prayer.

The prayer traces Israel’s entire history:

  1. Creation: God made the heavens, earth, seas, and all living things
  2. Abraham: God chose Abram, found him faithful, and made a covenant
  3. Exodus: God saw Israel’s suffering in Egypt, performed signs and wonders, and led them out
  4. The Wilderness: God gave the Law at Sinai, manna from heaven, water from the rock, and a pillar of cloud and fire to guide them.
  5. Rebellion: Despite miracles, Israel acted arrogantly and disobeyed
  6. Conquest and Kings: God gave them kingdoms and land, yet they again turned away, ignored His prophets, and hardened their hearts.
  7. Exile: God allowed foreign nations to rule over them because of their sin

The people admit that their current hardshipsare the result of their ancestors’ disobedience.

Nehemiah 10

Following the prayer and confession in chapter 9, the people make a binding agreement in writing.

Israel binds themselves with a curse and an oath to follow God’s Law given through Moses.

The covenant focuses on renewing faithfulness in three main areas:

1. Faithfulness in Relationships

  • They promise not to intermarry with the surrounding peoples

2. Faithfulness in Sabbath and Worship

  • They agree not to buy or sell on the Sabbath or other holy days.
  • They promise to observe the Sabbath year, allowing the land to rest and forgiving debts.

3. Faithfulness in Giving and Supporting God’s House

  • They pledge to give yearly contributions for the temple service
  • They will bring the firstfruits of their crops, fruit, and livestock to the house of God.
  • They also promise to bring the firstborn of their sons and animals
  • They agree to tithe from their produce so the Levites can continue their work
  • The Levites will bring a tenth of the tithes to the temple storehouses.

Questions

Were Ezra and Nehemiah friends?

Were there any people who did not participate?

Application

These chapters are about renewal after failure. We see not only confession from God’s people, but also a rejoining.  When we stray from God, He longs for us to return to Him. Coming back doesn’t mean you won’t ever fail again, but we can still commit to walk towards Him. God’s mercy is bigger than our mistakes. “Nevertheless, in your great mercies you did not make an end of them or forsake them, for you are a gracious and merciful God.”
