Job 24-26: The God of Hidden Light

Job 24

Job asks why God doesn’t set a time for judgment or reveal His justice. The wicked  move boundary stones, steal flocks, and exploit widows and orphans. The poor are left to scavenge for food and shelter in the wilderness. They labor for others’ gain while starving themselves.

Some “rebel against the light,” and choose darkness.The murderer rises before dawn to kill the poor and needy. The adulterer waits for twilight, thinking no one will see him.The thief breaks into houses at night and hides by day. Darkness becomes their comfort and cover.

Job admits the wicked won’t last forever as they’re like foam on water or snow that melts away. They are cursed by the earth and forgotten after death. Yet while alive, they seem strong and secure. God allows them to prosper for a time, but their downfall comes suddenly.

Job 25 Bildad’s Final Speech

This is the last speech of the three friends and it is quite short.

He declares that dominion and awe belong to God.God’s armies (heavenly hosts) are beyond number, and His light shines on all.

“How can a mortal be righteous before God?” Even the moon and stars are not pure in His sight.

Humanity is described as maggots and worms in comparison to God

Job 26

Job mocks Bildad’s brief speech: “How you have helped the powerless!” He sarcastically asks who gave Bildad such wisdom.

Job declares that the “dead tremble” beneath the waters and even the realm of the dead (Sheol) is laid bare before God. Nothing is hidden from His sight.

God stretches the heavens over empty space and suspends the earth on nothing. He wraps water in clouds, yet they don’t burst under its weight.He marks out the horizon between light and darkness. Earthquakes, storms, and the sea all respond to His command. By His breath the skies become clear; His hand pierces the fleeing serpent (a symbol of chaos).

• נָחָשׁ nakhash for snake. Same root word used in Genesis 3:1 for the serpent in Eden. I always like to know when the Bible mentions dragons or serpents or snakes what Hebrew word it is. 

Job concludes that all these mighty works are only “the outer fringe of His ways.” who can fully understand it?

Application

The God of Hidden Light. We have talked about how God seems absent in these first chapters of Job. In Chapter 24 the wicked “rebel against the light” by hiding their violence under the cover of night. Thieves, murderers, and adulterers make their moves in the darkness so they are not seen. But we know that God commands everything, even the unseen. Job’s response in Chapter 26 dives into God’s control of weather imagery: clouds, thunder, wind, and sea. These might seem chaotic to us but are completely under the authority of God.  When we cannot see the light, it does not mean it has gone out.  The God of “hidden” light still reigns over the dark earth, even amidst the chaos.
