Psalm 119: Yod-Lamed

Thoughts

Yod (י)

Your hands have made and fashioned me;
give me understanding that I may learn your commandments.

• God as Creator as the reason God should also be Teacher.

Those who fear you shall see me and rejoice,
because I have hoped in your word.

• Faithfulness is meant to be visible to our brothers and sisters 

I know, O Lord, that your rules are righteous,
and that in faithfulness you have afflicted me.

• Seasons of suffering can shape our faithfulness

Let your steadfast love comfort me
according to your promise to your servant.
Let your mercy come to me, that I may live;
for your law is my delight.

• God has promised to comfort his sheep
• The psalmist delights in the Word

Let the insolent be put to shame,
because they have wronged me with falsehood;
as for me, I will meditate on your precepts.

• God vindicates us to protect His people 
• The psalmist chooses meditation

Let those who fear you turn to me,
that they may know your testimonies.

• Obedience invites community 

May my heart be blameless in your statutes,
that I may not be put to shame.

• Psalmist target is “blameless”ness

Kaph (כ)

My soul longs for your salvation;
I hope in your word.
My eyes long for your promise;
I ask, “When will you comfort me?”

• psalmist “longs” or faints/aches for God
• The pairing of soul and eyes 

For I have become like a wineskin in the smoke,
yet I have not forgotten your statutes.

• A wineskin in smoke becomes dry, brittle
• loyalty under pressure.

How long must your servant endure?
When will you judge those who persecute me?

The insolent have dug pitfalls for me;
they do not live according to your law.

• The psalmist asks for justice
• God’s timing is questioned honestly

All your commandments are sure;
they persecute me with falsehood; help me!

• God’s commandments are described as reliable
• “Help me” is sometimes all we can cry out

They have almost made an end of me on earth,
but I have not forsaken your precepts.

• Near-destruction does not lead to abandoning faith.

In your steadfast love give me life,
that I may keep the testimonies of your mouth.

• God can give us endurance 

Lamed (ל) 

Forever, O Lord, your word
is firmly fixed in the heavens.
Your faithfulness endures to all generations;
you have established the earth, and it stands fast.
By your appointment they stand this day,
for all things are your servants.

• God’s word is portrayed as anchored and permanent
• Creation itself is obedient

If your law had not been my delight,
I would have perished in my affliction.

I will never forget your precepts,
for by them you have given me life.

• Delight in the law is our survival
• remembering God’s being equals life.

I am yours; save me,
for I have sought your precepts.

• Salvation is requested based on relationship

The wicked lie in wait to destroy me,
but I consider your testimonies.

• Threat does not ruin the psalmists’ faith

I have seen a limit to all perfection,
but your commandment is exceedingly broad.

• Human excellence has boundaries but God’s instruction does not.

Application

Yod shows  we are created, therefore we are teachable. When life feels overwhelming, pray for understanding over relief. Kaph shows us that waiting on God to work can feel tiring. Sometimes we have to endure without answers, but God can give us strength. Lamed continues to show us to stable ourselves in the Word. God’s Word gives life and anchors us when everything feels chaotic.
