Psalm 125

Those Who Trust in the LORD Are Like Mount Zion. A Song of Ascents.

Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion,
which cannot be moved, but abides forever.

• Trust is pictured as stability
• Mount Zion represents permanence 

As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so the LORD surrounds his people,
from this time forth and forevermore.

• Protection is described as encompassing like mountains

For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest
on the land allotted to the righteous,
lest the righteous stretch out
their hands to do wrong.

• Wicked rule is acknowledged but limited 
• God restrains oppression to protect His people from corruption

Do good, O LORD, to those who are good,
and to those who are upright in their hearts!

• The prayer appeals to God’s justice
• Uprightness is described internally 

But those who turn aside to their crooked ways
the LORD will lead away with evildoers!
Peace be upon Israel!

• Turning aside is gradual , there may be deviation before rebellion.

Psalm 126

Restore Our Fortunes, O LORD. A Song of Ascents.

When the LORD restored the fortunes of Zion,
we were like those who dream.
Then our mouth was filled with laughter,
and our tongue with shouts of joy;
then they said among the nations,
“The LORD has done great things for them.”

• Restoration felt surreal 
• Laughter and praise spill out naturally and  worship follows deliverance.
• God’s work is visible beyond Israel as the nations recognize His greatness.

The LORD has done great things for us;
we are glad.

• The community affirms the testimony 

Restore our fortunes, O LORD,
like streams in the Negeb!

• The Negeb dealt with intense flash floods during rain season. 

Those who sow in tears
shall reap with shouts of joy!
He who goes out weeping,
bearing the seed for sowing,
shall come home with shouts of joy,
bringing his sheaves with him.

• Faithfulness continues before circumstances change.
• Joy is promised, but it comes after labor.

Psalm 127

Unless the LORD Builds the House.A Song of Ascents. Of Solomon.

• Could be by Solomon, or by David for Solomon

Unless the LORD builds the house,
those who build it labor in vain.
Unless the LORD watches over the city,
the watchman stays awake in vain.

• Work and vigilance matter, but they are insufficient without God’s involvement.

It is in vain that you rise up early
and go late to rest,
eating the bread of anxious toil;
for he gives to his beloved sleep.

• God’s rest is portrayed as a gift, even when anxious

Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD,
the fruit of the womb a reward.

• Children are framed as gift, not achievement.
• Value is assigned by God, not by social or economic status

Like arrows in the hand of a warrior
are the children of one’s youth.
Blessed is the man
who fills his quiver with them!
He shall not be put to shame
when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.

• Emphasizes strength and future stability,
• Children represent continuity

Application

Psalm 125 show us that those who trust in the LordRD are like mount Zion. They are anchored on God’s characters, not how stable life may seem at the moment. Psalm 126 calls us to remember God’s work in us so that we may ask Him again for our needs. We must stay obedience even during seasons of tears, as joy may not come until later. Psalm 127 asks us to look at our work for God. Is it driven by trust or anxiety? God gives us rest as a gift so that we can build with God.
