Proverbs 5

The chapter opens again to listen closely and keep the following knowledge

The Allure of Forbidden Pleasure

• The warning centers on the “forbidden/foreign woman”  (imagery for sexual temptation and covenant unfaithfulness)
• What appears sweet and smooth at first is deceptive.
• Sexual sin is shown to have long-term consequences: loss of honor, strength, and peace.

Call to Distance and Wisdom

• Wisdom does not flirt with danger; it keeps distance.
• Avoidance is presented as strength, not weakness.
• Find satisfaction with your spouse
• Faithful love is celebrated as a blessing (interesting written from a man with 1000 women!)

God is portrayed as fully aware of every person’s ways. Nothing is hidden from Him

Sin ultimately entraps the one who chooses it. Folly leads to loss of freedom, not fulfillment.

Proverbs 6

Warning Against Rash Commitments

• The chapter opens with caution about impulsive promises to friends. 
• Taking responsibility for another’s debt entraps you.
• If you have done so, deal with foolish commitments quickly.

The Lazy Person

• The sluggard/lazy are now addressed using hardworking ants as an example. They have no captain yet do their job well.
• Laziness is shown as gradual – “a little sleep a little slumber”
• This overtime can lead to poverty

The Worthless Person: A wicked man: deceptive speech, manipulative, and devises evil

Seven things the LORD Hates

• A proud look,
• A lying tongue,
• Hands that shed innocent blood,
• A heart that devises wicked plans,
• Feet that are swift in running to evil,
• A false witness who speaks lies,
• And one who sows discord among brethren.

The son is told once again to keep his parental commands continually “tie them around your neck” 

Sexual sin leaves a man reduced to “a crust of bread”. Adultery destroys the soul

Proverbs 7

The chapter opens with wisdom presented as something to be treasured. Wisdom is your “sister”, Understanding is your “closest kin/ intimate friend”

• Wisdom = living rightly with what you know חָכְמָה  ḥokhmáh
• Understanding = grasping meaning  בִּינָה  bīnáhי

Story of Young Fool

• A young man is introduced. His danger is being naive  
• He meets a woman who is seductive
• She uses appearance and false assurances. Religious language is misused “peace offerings”
• He follows her after promises of sex, even knowing she has a husband. 

The outcome: What looked like freedom leads to death and destruction.

Questions

Application

Proverbs 5 tells us to obtain wisdom early on. Temptation is most dangerous at the beginning, when it still feels sweet and harmless. Wisdom urges distance before desire deepens and the damage is done. Proverbs 6 widens the lens beyond sexual temptation to show that wisdom governs ordinary decisions such as rash promises and laziness. Lastly, Proverbs 7 reveals how dangerous temptation can be. Sexual sin can lead to extreme destruction.
