vv. 1-3  Small folly, big consequences

• “Dead flies make the perfumer’s ointment give off a stench”
  • tiny thing → big effect
  • reputations fragile
  • wisdom doesn’t cancel folly; folly contaminates wisdom

Ecclesiastes 11

vv. 1-2  Uncertainty 

• “Cast your bread upon the waters”
  • economic risk/ being patient with money
  • delayed return
  • faith-based action
• “Give portions to seven, even to eight”
  • generosity amid uncertainty

vv. 3-5  Limits of knowledge

• Natural inevitability/ cause and effect
  • clouds full → rain
  • tree falls → there it stays
• Agricultural metaphor
  • waiting for perfect conditions prevents sowing
• Limits of humanity
  • We do not know the works of God
  • Or what will prosper 

vv. 7-8  The goodness of life

• Light is sweet
  • life affirmed
• Many days of joy but remember darkness

vv. 9-10 Youth and accountability

• Youth encouraged to rejoice
  • desire not demonized
• But:
  • God brings judgment
  • joy does not cancel accountability
• Remove sorrow
• youth is fleeting

Ecclesiastes 12

vv. 1-7 Remembering the Creator 

• Command: “Remember your Creator”
  • before habits harden
  • before we age

  • · The arms and hands that keep the body now begin to tremble (the keepers of the house tremble).
  • · The legs and knees begin to sag (the strong men bow down).
  • · Teeth are lost and chewing is more difficult (the grinders cease because they are few).
  • · The eyes are dimmed (the windows grow dim).
  • · The ears become weaker and weaker (the sound of grinding is low).
  • · Sleep becomes more difficult and one is easy wakened (one rises up at the sound of a bird).
  • · Singing and music are less appreciated (the daughters of music are brought low).
  • · One becomes more fearful in life (afraid of height, and of terrors in the way).
  • · The hair becomes white (the almond tree blossoms).
  • · The once active become weak (the grasshopper is a burden).
  • · The passions and desires of life weaken and wane (desire fails).

vv. 8-10  Vanity restated

• “Vanity of vanities”

  • But fleeting, vaporous

• Words of the wise
  • like goads
  • provoke movement
• Too many books
  • endless speculation
  • mental exhaustion

vv. 13-14  Final conclusion

• Fear God
• Keep commandments
• This is the whole of humanity
• Judgment universal

Ecclesiastes 10-12 calls us to live wisely in ordinary life while remembering how fragile and brief life is. These chapters call us to act, and not wait for the perfect conditions. We don’t know what the future holds, but we know we are called to be diligent, generous and joyful. We will never master this life…but we can fear God and trust in Him.
