Judgment on Damascus and Ephraim

Oracle against Damascus (Aram/Syria)

• Cities are reduced to ruins
• The northern kingdom of Israel (Ephraim) is included
• Political and military strength disappears

Israel’s “glory” fades

• Agricultural imagery:
  • Harvest stripped down
  • Only a few olives remain

People finally look to God

• Idolatry is abandoned
• God’s judgment brings man’s hard work to nothing

Many nations roar like the sea but God rebukes them. They will try to destroy Israel and Syria but will not win. 

Isaiah 18 Cush

Cush is known for speed, strength, and distance (modern Sudan/Ethiopia)

• A rising power 

All nations are called to pay attention

God describes Himself as quietly watching

• Like heat over fields or dew at harvest
• Then suddenly, He cuts down growth before it matures
• He rejects alliance with Ethiopia

Cush brings tribute to the LORD

Isaiah 19 Egypt

The LORD comes against Egypt

• Civil war begins
• Leadership collapses
• Fear and confusion spread

Economic and Environmental Collapse

• The Nile dries up- Egypt’s economy depended entirely on the Nile
• Agriculture fails
• Livelihoods disappear 

 Wisdom Fails

• Egypt’s leaders are mocked
• Counsel proves foolish
• Terror arises among the people e

Egypt trembles at the mention of Judah

Egypt Turns to the LORD

• Cities in Egypt worship the LORD
• An altar is raised to Him

 A Shocking  Unity

• Egypt, Assyria, and Israel are united
• Worship the LORD together
• God blesses all three!

Application

Isaiah 17-19 reminds us that there is no human strength, alliances, or knowledge greater than God. They will all eventually fail. These chapters show that God may appear quiet or distant for a time, but He is always working.
