Jeremiah 2-4

Jeremiah 2

“I remember the devotion of your youth…”

• Israel once followed God in the wilderness.
• Marriage imagery introduced.
•  God remembers faithfulness even when His people forget it.

“What wrong did your fathers find in me?”

• They followed “worthlessness” and became worthless.
• Priests, rulers, prophets all corrupt.

Verse 5
וַיֵּלְכוּ אַחֲרֵי הַהֶבֶל וַיֶּהְבָּלוּ

“They went after the hevel and became hevel.”

• הֶבֶל (hevel) vanity, vapor (echo of Ecclesiastes).
• also see 2 Kings 17:15

“Be appalled, O heavens…”

Two evils:

1. Forsaken the fountain of living waters
2. Hewed out broken cisterns

Israel seeks help from Egypt and Assyria.

• Foreign alliances = spiritual adultery.
• God says: “Your evil will chastise you.”

Spiritual Prostitution Imagery 

• Wild donkey in heat
• Stained hands with blood
• Calling idols “My father”

Israel claims innocence. God replies: You will be put to shame by the nations you trusted.

Jeremiah 3

Deut 24 background: a divorced woman can’t return.

• Yet Israel keeps returning to lovers (idols).
• “Vile whoredom” “forehead of a whore” 
• “You have sat by the waysides awaiting lovers,like an Arab (Hebrew desert nomad?) in the wilderness.”

God exposes hypocrisy:“You have the forehead of a prostitute.”

Northern kingdom (Israel) already exiled.

• Judah saw it but didn’t learn.
• Judah’s sin is called worse 

“Return, faithless Israel…” God promises:

• Shepherds after His heart
• No more ark fixation
• Jerusalem as global gathering place

“Truly the hills are a delusion, the orgies on the mountains. Truly in the LORD our God is the salvation of Israel.”

• Hebrew for orgies here is הָמוֹן which means noise or tumult 

“Truly in the LORD our God is the salvation of Israel.”

Jeremiah 4

God asks Israel to return to Him

“Circumcise yourselves to the LORD.”

• Physical covenant sign is not enough.
• Inner transformation needed

Babylon coming

• Trumpet alarms
• Lion imagery
• Destroyer of nations
• Dry wind of desolate heights 

Jeremiah has a bold outburst asking if God has deceived His people when He promised them peace. 

God continues that doom is upon them, and Jeremiah appeals to Jerusalem to wash themselves of their wickedness 

He feels it physically:

• “My anguish, my anguish!”
• Heart pounding

“I looked on the earth, and behold, it was without form and void…”

• Genesis 1 language reversed.
• Judgment = undoing creation.

What good is their gold when they are plundered? 

Jerusalem compared to a woman in labor.

• No rescue from lovers.
• The city cries out as destruction closes in.

Application

Jeremiah 2 shows us when we abandon God for our own personal idols we don’t gain freedom BUT Jeremiah 3 shows us that no depth of spiritual unfaithfulness places us beyond God’s call to return.  We are always given a choice. Jeremiah 4: If we refuse inward transformation, judgment eventually exposes what we would not surrender. Listen to God’s warnings now!
