Jeremiah 11-13

Jeremiah 11

God tells Jeremiah: Proclaim the words of the covenant.

Key structure:

• Blessing for obedience
• Curse for disobedience

God says:“Yet they did not obey or incline their ear.”

 Conspiracy Against the LORD

God says:A conspiracy is found in Judah.

• They returned to:
  • The sins of their fathers
  • Baal worship
• The number of their gods matches the number of their cities.

 No More Intercession

God tells Jeremiah:“Do not pray for this people.”

Metaphor: Judah was once a green olive tree.Now it will be burned.

• Green Olive Tree, Lovely and of Good Fruit.

Plot Against Jeremiah

Jeremiah discovers a plot from his own hometown, Anathoth. They say: “Do not prophesy… or you will die.”

He describes himself as:“a gentle lamb led to the slaughter.”

God promises judgment on the men of Anathoth.

Jeremiah 12

Jeremiah asks:“Why does the way of the wicked prosper?”

• This is a Job-like question.

He sees evil people thriving and God seemingly silent.

The land mourns because of wickedness.

God responds:“If you have raced with men on foot and they have wearied you,
how will you compete with horses?”

• Translation: It’s going to get harder.
• Jeremiah’s suffering is just beginning.
• Even his family will betray him.

God speaks of Israel as:

• “My house”
• “My beloved”
• “My heritage”

But He will abandon them to enemies.

The vineyard imagery appears again.

However:Even the surrounding nations can be restored if they learn the ways of the LORD.

Judgment is not final.

Jeremiah 13

The Belt

God tells Jeremiah: Buy a linen belt and wear it. Hide it by the Euphrates. He goes to find it and it is ruined. 

• Meaning: Israel was meant to cling to God closely but pride ruined them.

Sign of Wine Bottle

All jars will be filled with wine…But this wine represents judgment. God will smash them against each other.

“Give glory to the LORD before he brings darkness.”

• Jeremiah weeps again if they refuse.

Humiliation: The king and queen mother will be brought low.

“Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard his spots?”

• Meaning:Deeply ingrained sin is not easily reversed.

Application

Jeremiah 11-13 show that when we repeatedly ignore God’s voice and cling to pride, we slowly damage our relationship with Him. God calls us to stay steady when life gets harder, not easier. The warning for us is listen early, stay humble, and don’t let stubbornness turn into ruin.
