Jeremiah 17-19

Jeremiah 17

The sin of Judah is written with an iron pen.

• Sharp as a diamond
• Engraved on the tablet of the heart.
• Also on altar horns (worship corrupted).

Trust in man

• like a shrub in the desert
• lives in dry places

vs Trust in the LORD

• like a tree planted by water
• green, fruitful, steady
• This is similar to Psalm 1

“The heart is deceitful above all things…” We cannot trust our own internal instincts. God alone searches the heart.

Jeremiah’s Prayer

• The LORD is the “fountain of living water.”
• Jeremiah asks for healing.
• He asks God to vindicate him.

 Sabbath Warning

Jeremiah is asked to go and stand at the gates and call the people to keep the Sabbath.

• Ignoring Sabbath = rejecting covenant (Exodus 20:8-11)
• If they obey: Jerusalem will endure.
• If not: Fire will consume the gates.

Jeremiah 18

The Potter’s House

Jeremiah watches a potter.

• The clay is ruined
• The potter reshapes it.
• God says: Israel is like clay in My hand.

If God declares judgment and a nation repents then He relents. If He declares blessing and a nation turns evil then He withdraws blessing.

God says: “Return.” They respond:“It is hopeless.”

• They prefer their own plans.
• Judgment is described as: East wind scattering them.

Leaders conspire against Jeremiah. Jeremiah prays for justice and for God NOT to forgive their sin. 

Prays for: (Deuteronomy 28)

• Their children to go to famine
• Their blood to pour out by sword
• Wives to become widows
• Bereaved of children
• Men killed in battle 
• Their cries to be heard from their houses

Jeremiah 19

Shattered Jar

God tells Jeremiah:Buy a clay flask and go to the Valley of Hinnom (Topheth) to break it.

Why? Because Judah:

• Burned children in sacrifice.
• Filled the place with innocent blood.
• Turned away from God.

Jeremiah smashes the jar publicly.

• Message: Just as this jar cannot be repaired, so Jerusalem will be shattered.

Final Declaration

Back at the temple:God will bring disaster because they stiffened their necks.

Application

Where we place our trust reveals the condition of our hearts and determines whether we wither or flourish. God even tells us He has the divine authority to reshape nations but persistent refusal limits the opportunity for renewal.  When a people harden themselves beyond repentance, judgment can become final.
