Jeremiah 23-25

Jeremiah 23

Leaders (kings, priests, prophets) scattered the flock.

• Instead of protecting, they destroyed.
• God promises:
  • He Himself will gather the remnant.
  • Faithful shepherds will be raised.

Messianic prophecy: “I will raise up for David a righteous Branch.” He will:

• Reign wisely
• Execute justice
• Bring security

Name:“The LORD is our righteousness” (יְהוָה צִדְקֵנוּ YHWH Tsidkenu)

A new exodus greater than Egypt is promised.

Jeremiah shaken by their evil prophets and their:

• Adultery
• Lies
• Encouraging evil

Even Jerusalem’s prophets worse than Samaria’s.

False prophets claim:“Peace.” But they speak:

• Dreams
• Imagination
• Not God’s word

Contrast:God’s word = fire and hammer.

מַשָּׂא (massaʾ) This word has two related meanings:

1. Burden
2. Oracle / prophetic message

By Jeremiah’s time, people were using the phrase sarcastically. They were basically saying: “Oh great… what’s God’s burden now?”

So the pun works like this:

Their Meaning	God’s Response
“What’s the LORD’s oracle?”	“You yourselves are the burden.”

Permanent shame for rejecting His word.

Jeremiah 24

Historical setting:After first Babylonian exile (597 BC).

 Two Baskets

• Good figs
• Very bad figs

The Good Figs

Surprising message:The exiles taken to Babylon = GOOD figs.

God says:

• I sent them for their good.
• He will restore them.
• Give them a new heart.

The Bad Figs

Those remaining in Jerusalem = BAD figs.

They trust false security. Outcome:

• Sword
• Famine
• Pestilence

Jeremiah 25

Jeremiah summarizes ministry:

• Preached since Josiah.
• People refused to listen.
• Judgment now unavoidable.

God calls Nebuchadnezzar:“My servant.” Judah and surrounding nations will serve Babylon.

Key prophecy: Seventy years of exile and land will lie desolate. After seventy years, Babylon itself will fall. God judges all empires.

Cup of God’s Wrath

Jeremiah symbolically gives nations a cup to drink.

Represents: Inevitable judgment spreading outward. Starts with Jerusalem,then all nations.

God roars like a lion. Disaster from nation to nation.  Even shepherds (leaders) cannot escape.

Application

These chapters show the seriousness of corruption in leaders. There will be a definite time for judgment and for God to prove His authority over all nations. There will be a future righteous king who will shepherd His people.
