Jeremiah 29

Jeremiah sends a letter from Jerusalem to Jews already exiled in Babylon (after 597 BC deportation).

Written to:

  • Elders
  • Priests
  • Prophets
  • People taken with King Jehoiachin

Jeremiah instructs the exiles to settle in Babylon. 

  • Build houses
  • Plant gardens
  • Marry
  • Have families
  • Seek the welfare of Babylon

Warning: Do not listen to false prophets promising quick return.

After 70 years:

  • God will restore them.
  • Bring them home.

Famous verse Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you…”

False prophets promising safety will face judgment.

Another false prophet attempts to silence Jeremiah names Shemaiah. God declares punishment on him and his descendants.

Jeremiah 30

Beginning of the “Book of Consolation” (chs. 30–33).

God commands Jeremiah to record restoration promises. The return from captivity is guaranteed by God

  1. Time of Trouble “The time of Jacob’s trouble…”

    Severe distress coming but Israel will be saved from it.

    • Described like a woman in labor, faces turning pale. 

    2. Healing After Judgment

      There will be no more slaves. God promises to restore and gather. 

      Israel’s wound described as incurable. Yet God says:“I will restore health to you.”

      3. Restoration

        • Cities rebuilt
        • Joy restored
        • Multiplication of people 
        • Community renewed

        Key covenant phrase returns: “You shall be my people, and I will be your God.”

        God’s wrath still falls on the wicked and has fierce anger against them. 

        Jeremiah 31

        God says He will gather the scattered Israel.

        • “I have loved you with an everlasting love.”
        • Hesed חֶסֶד mentioned 
        • He will rebuild Israel 

        God leads them home like a shepherd.

        • Weak and vulnerable included.
        • Ephraim is God’s firstborn
          • Remember Ephraim was not firstborn of Joseph but Jacob reverses the greater blessing(Genesis 48) 

        God turns our mourning into joy. His people will be satisfied 

        Rachel symbolizes mourning mothers of Israel.

        • “Voice heard in Ramah…” where she was buried (1 Samuel 10:2)
        • Later quoted in Matthew regarding Bethlehem (Matthew 2:16-18)

        God loves Ephraim as a son and will have mercy on him. 

        “For the Lord has created a new thing on the earth: a woman encircles a man”

        • There will be so much safety that roles are reversed 
        • נְקֵבָה (neqevah) emphasizes gender roles (Genesis 1:27) vs אִשָּׁה (ishah) relational Genesis 2:23

        New Covenant

        God promises:

        • Covenant not like Sinai.
        • Law written on hearts.
        • Personal knowledge of God.
        • Full forgiveness of sin.

        As certain as creation itself, Israel’s future restoration stands.

        Application

        God calls His people to live faithfully where they are while trusting His long-term plan for restoration. Even after severe discipline, God promises to heal and restore His people.
