Jeremiah 47 Philistia

Prophecy against Philistines

Philistia sits along the coastal plain (Gaza region).

Babylon described as a rising flood. Courage will be forgotten 

Philistine cities affected:

• Gaza: baldness
• Ashkelon: perished 

Caphtor = the ancient homeland of the Philistines (most likely Crete or the Aegean region).

Sword of the LORD mentioned: God’s judgment. 

Jeremiah 48 Moab

Judgment on Moab

This is one of the longest nation-oracles.

Moab was east of the Dead Sea (see map below) 

Moab’s strongholds named and condemned.

• “Woe to Nebo”  city likely near Mount Nebo east of the Jordan (where Moses stood looking at the promised land in Deuteronomy 34:1) 
• Kiriathaim: A Moabite stronghold (also mentioned in Numbers 32:37).
• Misgab: Name means “fortress” or “high place.”
• Heshbon: Major city north of the Arnon River.
• Madmen : Name sounds like “silence” in Hebrew, possibly wordplay מַדְמֵן
• Horonaim: Southern Moabite city, often linked with lament imagery.
• Luhith:  Southern Moabite city, mentioned with people going up weeping.

Moab compared to wine left undisturbed. They were comfortable but now the jars will break to pieces. 

Moab trusted:

• Its god Chemosh
  • Chemosh is the national god of Moab, there are mentions in the OT of Chemosh, including Numbers 21:29, Judges 11:24,1 Kings 11:7
  • Chemosh was a ‘warrior god’
• Its wealth
• Its pride

Moab will be ashamed.. Jeremiah even expresses sorrow for Moab

The list stretches across northern, central, and southern Moab.

Moab will fall like an eagle swooping down. But:A small restoration promise appears at the end.

Jeremiah 49

 Multiple Nations Judged

Ammon

Accused of seizing Israel’s territory.

They trusted false gods (Milcom) 

Judgment coming but like Moab, restoration is promised

“Milcom dispossessed Gad”

• Milcom is same as Molech, the national god of the Ammonites.

Rabbah: The capital city of Ammon. Mentioned in 2 Samuel 11–12
Heshbon: Major city east of Jordan 

Edom

Edom condemned for:

• False wisdom 
• Violence toward Judah
• Self-confidence in own fortresses

Edom will be made small.

The fall compared to Sodom and Gomorrah.

Teman: major city in Edom 
Dedan: trading nation south of Edom 
Bozrah: major city in Edom 

Damascus (Syria/Aram)

Major trade city.

Fear and panic described.

Fire imagery symbolizes destruction.

Syria: Greek/Roman name
Aram: Hebrew name – Aram, son of Shem (Genesis 10:22).

Damascus: Capital of Syria 
Hamath: Syrian city 
Arpad: fortress city 

Ben-hadad: represents Damascus “son of Hadad” (storm and fertility god) 

Kedar & Hazor

Kedar

• Arabian nomadic tribe.
• Descendants of Kedar, son of Ishmael (Genesis 25:13).
• Lived in the northern Arabian desert.
• Known for flocks, tents, and caravan trade.

Hazor (in this context)

• Not the Canaanite city in Israel.
• Likely refers to desert encampments or settlements.
• Possibly same as Judges 4

Nebuchadnezzar would conquer Kedar and Hazor 

Elam

Located east of Babylon (modern Iran region).

God will:

• Shatter their bow (military power).
• Scatter them.
• Yet later restore them.

Questions:

Is restoration of Moab and Ammon and Elam mentioned future or already happened?

Application

We see the divine judgment of many nations in these chapters. How does that apply to our lives today? First it shows that God is not just ‘our’ God, but is the God of every nation, even those who reject Him. It shows that we are all held accountable, and that His word and prophecy comes true (all of these judgments came to pass). It also shows that God is a God of mercy, as we see several nations promised restoration.
