Zechariah 4

Vision 5: Lampstand & Two Olive Trees

• Golden lampstand (מְנוֹרָה – menorah)
• Bowl on top, seven lamps, seven pipes
• Two olive trees directly supplying oil

Interpretation

“Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit…”

• Temple will be completed
• Not through human strength—but God’s Spirit

Zerubbabel’s Role

• “Great mountain”  becomes a plain (obstacles removed)
• Zerubbabel will:
  • Lay the foundation
  • Finish the temple

The Two Olive Trees

• Represent:
  • Zerubbabel (kingly line)
  • Joshua (priesthood)

“Two anointed ones” (sons of oil)

Zechariah 5

Vision 6: Flying Scroll

• Huge scroll (about 30 × 15 feet)
• Flies over the land
• Message: Curse against:
  • Thieves
  • False swearers

Vision 7: Woman in a Basket 

• Basket (ephah = commerce/economy)
• Woman inside = “Wickedness”
• Lead lid seals her in

Removal

• Two women carry basket to Shinar (Babylon)
• Wickedness is removed from the land

Zechariah 6

 Vision 8: Four Chariots

• Four chariots from between bronze mountains
• Strong Horses:
  • Red
  • Black
  • White
  • Dappled

 Interpretation

• “Four spirits of heaven”
• Sent to patrol/judge the earth
•  Especially Judgment on the north (Babylon region)

 The Crown & The Branch

Crown made

• Taken from returned exiles Heldai, Tobijah, and Jedaiah
• Placed on Joshua the high priest

 The Branch

“Behold, the man whose name is the Branch…”

• He will:
  • Build the temple
  • Sit and rule as king
  • Be a priest on His throne
• People from afar will come help build

“If you will diligently obey…”

Application
Zechariah 4-6 reminds us that God’s work in our lives is not accomplished through our own strength but by His Spirit. God works to restore His people and remove their sin.  We can see these chapters point to Jesus, or the Branch.
