John 17

Jesus lifts His eyes to heaven and prays

• Asks the Father to glorify the Son
  • Purpose: that the Son may glorify the Father
• Jesus has authority over all flesh, to give eternal life

“This is eternal life, that they know you…”

• Eternal life is:
  • knowing the Father
  • knowing Jesus Christ

Jesus says He completed the work given by the Father

Jesus speaks of glory shared with the Father “before the world existed.”

Jesus Prays for the Disciples

• Disciples belonged to the Father
• Father gave them to Jesus
• Jesus prays:
  • keep them
  • protect them

“Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.”

• As the Father sent Jesus, Jesus sends His disciples

Jesus prays for all future believers

• unity among believers

Unity Reflects God

• Christian unity meant to witness to the world

Desire for Believers’ Future Glory

• Jesus desires believers to:
  • be with Him
  • see His glory

Jesus made the Father known and continues revealing Him through lov

John 18

Jesus crosses Kidron Valley and goes to garden with disciples

Judas Iscariot arrives with soldiers and officers

• Jesus asks twice: “Whom do you seek?”
• They answer twice:“Jesus of Nazareth”
• Jesus says twice: “I am he.”
• Soldiers draw back and fall to ground

Simon Peter cuts off ear of Malchus

• Jesus rebukes Peter
• Jesus is arrested

Jesus taken to Caiaphas and Annas the father-in-law of Caiaphas. 

Peter denies Jesus a first time 

Jesus is questioned about:

• disciples
• teaching
• Officer strikes Jesus
  • Jesus challenges injustice of the blow

Peter warms himself while Jesus is tried, and denies Him a second and a third time

• Rooster crows
• Fulfillment of Jesus’ prediction

Jesus Before Pilate

• Leaders refuse entering Praetorium to remain ceremonially clean for Passover
• Ironic because they are concerned about ritual purity while condemning innocent Jesus
• Pontius Pilate questions Jesus “Are You the King of the Jews?”
  • Jesus says:“My kingdom is not of this world.”

Jesus says: “Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”

• Pilate responds: “What is truth?”

Pilate find no guilt in him. However, crowd chooses to release Barabbas instead of Jesus

John 19

Jesus scourged

• Soldiers mock Him as king with:
  • crown of thorns
  • purple robe

Pilate presents Jesus “Behold the man!”

• Ecce Homo Latin 

Leaders accuse Jesus of claiming “Son of God”

• Pilate becomes more fearful
• Jesus tells Pilate “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above.”

Crowd states “We have no king but Caesar” 

Jesus Carries His Cross

• Goes to GolgothaΓολγοθᾶ = Skull
  • Latin: Calvary
• Jesus crucified with two others

Pilate writes: “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” In:

• Hebrew/Aramaic
• Latin
• Greek
• chief priests said “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’” Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.”

Soldiers cast lots for tunic

• Fulfills Psalm 22

Jesus entrusts Mary to beloved disciple

“I Thirst”

“It Is Finished”

• Jesus Dies. Jesus gives up His spirit willingly

Soldiers do not break Jesus’ legs

Application

Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. We see a beautiful picture of Scripture fulfillment and ultimate love. Before His death we see how much He loves us through His prayer to the Father. We are called to be unified with one another.
