1 Thessalonians 2

 Paul’s Ministry 

• Paul’s ministry was not in vain
• He preached despite opposition and suffering
• He did not come in greed or deception
• He cared for them like:
  • A nursing mother caring for children
  • A father encouraging his children
• He urged them to walk in a manner worthy of God

Their Reception of God’s Word

• The Thessalonians accepted Paul’s message as God’s Word
• They endured persecution
  • Paul compares their suffering to that experienced by the churches in Judea

Paul’s Desire to See Them Again

• Paul was separated from them but not in heart
• He repeatedly tried to return
  • Satan hindered those efforts
• The Thessalonians are Paul’s joy, crown, and hope

1 Thessalonians 3

Paul could no longer bear not being with them

• He sent Timothy to encourage them
• Believers should expect affliction
• Paul feared persecution might have weakened their faith

Timothy’s Encouraging Report

• Timothy returns with good news
  • Their faith and love remain strong
  • They still remember Paul fondly
• He thanks God for them and prays continually for them

Paul’s Prayer for Them

1 Thessalonians 4

A Life Pleasing to God

• Paul urges believers to please God more and more
• God’s will is their sanctification
• Avoid sexual immorality
• Exercise self-control and purity
• God calls His people to holiness

The Thessalonians already demonstrate brotherly love

• Paul encourages them to grow even more
• Live quietly
• Mind your own affairs
• Work diligently
• Walk properly before outsiders
• Be dependent on no one

The Coming of the Lord

• Paul addresses believers who have died
• Christians grieve differently because they have hope
• Paul gives us a glimpse of the future:
  • Jesus will return
  • The dead in Christ will rise first
  • Living believers will be caught up together with them
  • Believers will always be with the Lord
• Encourage one another with these truths

Application

We are to serve one another and help them grow in Christ. We see Paul give the Thessalonians encouragement and support to remain faithful even despite affliction. We are to lift up our brothers and help them in trials of persecution. Even when we can’t be with them, we can pray for them and encourage them.
