2 Thessalonians

 Prayer and Confidence

  • Paul asks for prayer that the gospel would spread rapidly
  • He asks for protection from evil people
  • The Lord is faithful and will strengthen and guard believers
  • Paul expresses confidence in the Thessalonians 
  • He prays that they would grow in God’s love and Christ’s steadfastness

Warning Against Idleness

  • Some believers had become idle 
  • Paul points to his own examples of his hard work
  • “If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat”
  • Believers should work quietly and earn their own living
  • The church should correct idle brothers

Paul prays for peace

  • He writes the letter with his own handwriting

Final blessing of grace

1 Timothy 1

Paul writing to Timothy  “my true child in the faith” 

Timothy was serving in Ephesus. Paul had left Timothy there to address problems within the church.

Date: Likely AD 62-65

Written after Paul’s first Roman imprisonment and before his final imprisonment that likely led to his execution.

Paul greets Timothy

  • Grace, mercy, and peace are extended to him

Warning against False Teachers

  • Timothy is to remain in Ephesus
    • He is asked to help certain people are teaching false doctrine
    • They are obsessed with myths and endless genealogies
    • Such teaching produces speculation rather than faith
  • The goal of instruction is:
    • Love
    • A pure heart
    • A good conscience
    • Sincere faith
  • The Law is good when used properly
  • The Law exposes sin

Paul’s Testimony of Grace

  • Paul thanks Christ for calling him
  • He formerly persecuted the church
    • But he received mercy 
    • Through faith and love in Christ
  • Christ came to save sinners
  • Paul calls himself the foremost of sinners
    • But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.

 Fight the Good Fight

  • Timothy is charged to continue his ministry
    • Have faith and a good conscience
  • Some have made shipwreck of their faith
    • Hymenaeus
    • Alexander
  • They have been “handed over to Satan”
1 Timothy 2

 Prayer for All People

  • Pray for:
    • Everyone
    • Kings
    • Government authorities
  • “that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way”
  • God desires all people to be saved
  • There is:
    • One God
    • One mediator between God and humanity
      • Christ Jesus
  • Christ gave Himself as a ransom for all

Conduct in Worship

  • Men should pray without anger or quarrels
  • Women should dress modestly and appropriately
  • Godly character is more important than outward appearance
  • Good works should adorn believers

Order in the Church

  • Women are to act under authority of men within the order of the church
  • Adam was not deceived, Eve was, but sin entered through him due to his role. 
  • Women are encouraged toward faithfulness, holiness, love, and self-control

Application

We are called to reject false teaching and conduct ourselves in a way that honors God.
