1 Timothy 6

 Honor in the Workplace

  • Servants should honor their masters
  • Christian servants should not become disrespectful toward Christian masters

False Teachers and the Love of Money

  • False teachers are full of conceit and crave controversy
  • They view godliness as a means of financial gain
  • Godliness with contentment is great gain
    • We brought nothing into the world and take nothing out
  • The love of money is a root of all kinds of evils
  • Some have wandered from the faith through greed

Fight the Good Fight 

  • Timothy is to flee sinful desires
  • Pursue:
    • Righteousness
    • Godliness
    • Faith
    • Love
    • Steadfastness
    • Gentleness
  • Fight the good fight of faith
  • Hold fast to eternal life
  • Christ will return at the proper time

 Instructions for the Rich

  • Do not trust in riches
  • Trust in God
  • Be generous
  • Be ready to share
  • Store up treasure for the future

Guard what has been entrusted to you

  • Avoid false knowledge 
  • Some have wandered from the faith
2 Timothy 1

Author: Paul 

This is Paul’s final known letter.

He writes to Timothy

Date: Likely AD 64-67, probably right before Paul’s death

Paul greets Timothy

  • He thanks God for Timothy’s sincere faith
  • Timothy’s faith was first evident in:
    • Grandmother Lois
    • Mother Eunice
  • Timothy is urged to use his spiritual gift boldly
  • God gives:
    • Power
    • Love
    • Self-control
  • Not fear

 Do Not Be Ashamed

  • Do not be ashamed of Christ
  • Do not be ashamed of Paul
  • Be willing to suffer for the gospel
  • Christ abolished death and brought life and immortality

Hold fast to sound teaching

  • Guard the gospel through the Holy Spirit

Many in Asia abandoned Paul

  • Onesiphorus remained faithful
  • He sought Paul out and encouraged him
2 Timothy 2

 Be Strong and Endure

  • Be strengthened by God’s grace
  • Entrust truth to faithful people
  • Paul uses three illustrations:
    • Soldier
    • Athlete
    • Farmer

 Endure for the Gospel

  • Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead
  • Paul suffers imprisonment for the gospel
  • God’s Word is not bound
  • Endurance leads to other’s belief

A Worker Approved by God

  • Avoid quarrels about words
  • Present yourself approved to God
  • Rightly handle the Word of truth

  • A house contains vessels for honorable and dishonorable use
  • Cleanse yourself from sin
  • Pursue:
    • Righteousness
    • Faith
    • Love
    • Peace
  • Avoid foolish controversies
  • Correct opponents with gentleness
  • God may grant them repentance

Application

We are told to not focus on wealth, but instead store up our treasure in heaven. We are also told not to be ashamed of Christ but boldly use our gifts and remain faithful.
