30ย When Rachel saw thatย she bore Jacob no children, she envied her sister. She said to Jacob, โGive me children, or I shall die!โย 2ย Jacob’s anger was kindled against Rachel, and he said, โAm I in the place of God,ย who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?โย 3ย Then she said, โHere is my servantย Bilhah; go in to her, so that she may give birthย on my behalf,ย that even I may have children through her.โ
- The Hebrew phrase Rachel says she wants Bilhah to bear a child “on her knees” – this could be a figure of speech but could also be intended literally during the delivering of the child
ย 4ย So she gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife, and Jacob went in to her.ย 5ย And Bilhah conceived and bore Jacob a son.ย 6ย Then Rachel said, โGod hasย judged me, and has also heard my voice and given me a son.โ Therefore she called his name Dan.
- Dan (ืึธึผื) – He judged / Vindicatedย
ย 7ย Rachel’s servant Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son.ย 8ย Then Rachel said, โWith mighty wrestlingsย I have wrestled with my sister and have prevailed.โ So she called his nameย Naphtali.
- Naphtali (ื ึทืคึฐืชึธึผืึดื) – My wrestling
9ย When Leah saw that she had ceased bearing children, she took her servant Zilpah andย gave her to Jacob as a wife.ย 10ย Then Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a son.ย 11ย And Leah said,ย โGood fortune has come!โ so she called his nameย Gad.
- Gad (ืึธึผื) – Good fortune / Troop
12ย Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son.ย 13ย And Leah said, โHappy am I! For womenย have called me happy.โ So she called his name Asher.
- Asher (ืึธืฉึตืืจ) – Happy / Blessed
14ย In the days of wheat harvest Reuben went and foundย mandrakes in the field and brought them to his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, โPlease give me some of your son’s mandrakes.โย 15ย But she said to her, โIs it a small matter that you have taken away my husband? Would you take away my son’s mandrakes also?โ Rachel said, โThen he may lie with you tonight in exchange for your son’s mandrakes.โย 16ย When Jacob came from the field in the evening, Leah went out to meet him and said, โYou must come in to me, for I have hired you with my son’s mandrakes.โ So he lay with her that night.
- Mandrakes were thought to be associated with fertility
- Not for Rachel, who would have to wait for God to open her womb
- Could wives trade plants for sex?

ย 17ย And God listened to Leah, and she conceived and bore Jacob a fifth son.ย 18ย Leah said, โGod has given me my wages because I gave my servant to my husband.โ So she called his name Issachar.
- Issachar (ืึดืฉึธึผืืฉืึธืจ) – There is reward / Man of wagesย
19ย And Leah conceived again, and she bore Jacob a sixth son.ย 20ย Then Leah said, โGod has endowed me with a good endowment; now my husband will honor me, because I have borne him six sons.โ So she called his nameย Zebulun.ย 21ย Afterward she bore a daughter and called her name Dinah.
- Zebulun (ืึฐืืึผืึปื) – Honor / Dwellingย
- Dinah (ืึดึผืื ึธื) – Judgment / Vindicatedย
22ย Then Godย remembered Rachel, and God listened to her andย opened her womb.ย 23ย She conceived and bore a son and said, โGod has taken awayย my reproach.โย 24ย And she called his name Joseph,ย saying,ย โMay theย Lordย add to me another son!โ
- Joseph (ืืึนืกึตืฃ) – May He add / He gathersย

Jacob’s Prosperity
25ย As soon as Rachel had borne Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, โSend me away, that I may go to my own home and country.ย 26ย Give me my wives and my childrenย for whom I have served you, that I may go, for you know the service that I have given you.โย 27ย But Laban said to him, โIf I have found favor in your sight, I have learned by divination that theย Lordย has blessed me because of you.ย
- Laban recognizes that Yahweh is blessing him.
- Yet he attributes this knowledge to divination, a pagan practice
- The Hebrew word for “practice divination” (ื ึดืึทืฉึฐืืชึดึผื) shares the same consonants as the word for “serpent” (ื ึธืึธืฉื).
28ย Name your wages, and I will give it.โย 29ย Jacob said to him,ย โYou yourself know how I have served you, and how your livestock has fared with me.ย 30ย For you had little before I came,ย and it has increased abundantly, and theย Lordย has blessed you wherever I turned. But now when shall Iย provide for my own household also?โย
- Jacob acknowledges he came to Laban with nothing, and his hard work has paid off for Labon. However it was time to leave as his obligation(s) were complete
31ย He said, โWhat shall I give you?โ Jacob said, โYou shall not give me anything. If you will do this for me, I will again pasture your flock and keep it:ย 32ย let me pass through all your flock today, removing from it every speckled and spotted sheep and every black lamb, and the spotted and speckled among the goats, andย they shall be my wages.ย 33ย So my honesty will answer for me later, when you come to look into my wages with you. Every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats and black among the lambs, if found with me, shall be counted stolen.โย 34ย Laban said, โGood! Let it be as you have said.โย
- Summary: Jacob asks for
- speckled sheep
- spotted goats
- dark-colored lambs
- These would have been the minority of the flock.
- At first this sounds like a terrible deal and Laban immediately agrees because it benefits him.
ย 35ย But that day Laban removed the male goats that were striped and spotted, and all the female goats that were speckled and spotted, every one that had white on it, and every lamb that was black, and put them in the charge of his sons.ย 36ย And he set a distance of three days’ journey between himself and Jacob, and Jacob pastured the rest of Laban’s flock.
- The second part is confusing where Laban removes the spotted. I’ve read some commentary that it was supposed to be that way and Jacob would only receive the solid colored flock, keeping only the speckled offspring. However some have said that Laban was cheating and removing what should have been Jacobs.
36ย And he set a distance of three days’ journey between himself and Jacob, and Jacob pastured the rest of Laban’s flock.
- The distance would have kept the flock from mingling
37ย Thenย Jacob took fresh sticks of poplar and almond and plane trees, and peeled white streaks in them, exposing the white of the sticks.
- Jacob uses peeled sticks from trees, placing them at the watering troughs.
- These sticks were white inside which plays on the Hebrew word lavan (white), which is also Lab(v)anโs name
38ย He set the sticks that he had peeled in front of the flocks in the troughs, that is, theย watering places, where the flocks came to drink. And since they bred when they came to drink,ย 39ย the flocks bred in front of the sticks and so the flocks brought forth striped, speckled, and spotted.ย 40ย And Jacob separated the lambs and set the faces of the flocks toward the striped and all the black in the flock of Laban. He put his own droves apart and did not put them with Laban’s flock.ย 41ย Whenever the stronger of the flock were breeding, Jacob would lay the sticks in the troughs before the eyes of the flock, that they might breed among the sticks,ย 42ย but for the feebler of the flock he would not lay them there. So the feebler would be Laban’s, and the stronger Jacob’s.ย
- Some say that Jacob knew about selective breeding https://enduringword.com/bible-commentary/genesis-30/
- One unusual proposal (I will only put because Bible Project teaches it here: https://bibleproject.com/classroom/jacob/sessions/17) suggested that Jacob used the poplar rods as fake phalluses and allowed the undesired animals to become aroused by the rods (so they wouldn’t mate), similar to how modern breeders use artificial mating devices and teaser animals to trigger heat. 43ย Thus the manย increased greatly andย had large flocks, female servants and male servants, and camels and donkeys.
- The Hebrew here says Jacob “burst forth very very”
