Judah and Tamar
It happened at that time that Judah went down from his brothers andย turned aside to a certainย Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.ย
- Adullam was a town in Canaan
2ย There Judah saw the daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name wasย Shua. He took her and went in to her,
- This phrase “went in to” (sex) happens 3 times in this chapter with 3 different couples.
3ย and she conceived and bore a son, and he called his nameย Er.ย 4ย She conceived again and bore a son, and she called his nameย Onan.ย 5ย Yet again she bore a son, and she called his nameย Shelah. Judahย was in Chezib when she bore him.
6ย And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.ย 7ย But Er, Judah’s firstborn,ย was wicked in the sight of theย Lord, and theย Lordย put him to death.ย
- Judah takes a wife from Canaan which his ancestors have been told not to do, and then has a son so wicked God Himself kills him.
8ย Then Judah said to Onan, โGo in toย your brother’s wife andย perform the duty of a brother-in-law to her, and raise up offspring for your brother.โย 9ย But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his.
- If Tamar produced a son for Er (through Onan), that child would legally inherit Er’s portion and Onan’s inheritance would become smaller.
So whenever he went in to his brother’s wife he would waste the semen on the ground, so as not to give offspring to his brother.ย 10ย And what he did was wicked in the sight of theย Lord, and he put him to death also.
- On Onan spilling his seed: This passage is sometimes misread as a condemnation of all sexual acts outside procreation (masturbation or contraception). Onanโs sin was his intentional refusal to fulfill a sacred duty, but still engage in sexual intercourse.ย
- Did Tamar know this was happening?
11ย Then Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law,ย โRemain a widow in your father’s house, till Shelah my son grows upโโfor he feared that he would die, like his brothers. So Tamar went and remainedย in her father’s house.
- Judah however would not give Shelah to Tamar as we see in verse 14.
12ย In the course of time the wife of Judah, Shua’s daughter, died. When Judahย was comforted, he went up toย Timnah to his sheepshearers, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.ย 13ย And when Tamar was told, โYour father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep,โย 14ย she took off her widow’s garmentsย and covered herself with a veil, wrapping herself up, and sat at the entrance toย Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. For she saw that Shelah was grown up,ย and she had not been given to him in marriage.ย 15ย When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face.
- How did Tamar know Judah would sleep with her? Is this something that he has done before?
ย 16ย He turned to her at the roadside and said, โCome, let me come in to you,โ for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, โWhat will you give me, that you may come in to me?โย 17ย He answered, โI will send you a young goat from the flock.โ And she said, โIf you give me a pledge, until you send itโโย 18ย He said, โWhat pledge shall I give you?โ She replied,ย โYour signet and your cord and your staff that is in your hand.โ So he gave them to her and went in to her, and she conceived by him.ย 19ย Then she arose and went away, and taking offย her veil she put on the garments of her widowhood.
- Lot’s daughters and Tamar use deception to sleep with their father (in-law). Lot’s daughter has Moab (line of Ruth) and Tamar has twins of whom Perez is the twin who carries the line of Jesus (through Boaz).
20ย When Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite to take back the pledge from the woman’s hand, he did not find her.ย 21ย And he asked the men of the place, โWhere is the cult prostituteย who was atย Enaim at the roadside?โ And they said, โNo cult prostitute has been here.โย
- Hirah was willing to help him cover his sin.
22ย So he returned to Judah and said, โI have not found her. Also, the men of the place said, โNo cult prostitute has been here.โโย 23ย And Judah replied, โLet her keep the things as her own, or we shall be laughed at. You see, I sent this young goat, and you did not find her.โ
24ย About three months later Judah was told, โTamar your daughter-in-lawย has been immoral.ย Moreover, she is pregnant by immorality.โย And Judah said, โBring her out, andย let her be burned.โย
- Horrifying how nonchalant he is about burning his daughter-in-law when he KNOWS he did the same thing.
25ย As she was being brought out, she sent word to her father-in-law, โBy the man to whom these belong, I am pregnant.โ And she said, โPlease identify whose these are,ย the signet and the cord and the staff.โย 26ย Then Judah identified them and said,ย โShe is more righteous than I, sinceย I did not give her to my son Shelah.โ And he did not know her again.
- I understand there was darkness and a veil but how do men in the Bible keep not recognizing people they have sex with (Jacob/Leah, Judah/Tamar)?
27ย When the time of her labor came, there were twins in her womb.ย 28ย And when she was in labor, one put out a hand, and the midwife took and tied a scarlet thread on his hand, saying, โThis one came out first.โย 29ย But as he drew back his hand, behold, his brother came out. And she said, โWhat a breach you have made for yourself!โ
- Very similar to Esau and Jacob!
Therefore his name was calledย Perez.30ย Afterward his brother came out with the scarlet thread on his hand, and his name was calledย Zerah.
- Perezย (ืคึถึผืจึถืฅ)ย “Breach,” “breakthrough,” or “bursting forth”
- Perez would carry the line of the Messiah
- Zerahย (ืึถืจึทื)ย “Rising,” “dawning,” or “shining”
