Leviticus 24. Care and Rules

The Lamps

TheΒ LordΒ spoke to Moses, saying,Β 2Β β€œCommand the people of Israel to bring you pure oil from beaten olives for the lamp, that a light may be kept burning regularly.Β 3Β Outside the veil of the testimony, in the tent of meeting, Aaron shall arrange it from evening to morning before theΒ LordΒ regularly. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations.Β 4Β He shall arrange the lamps on theΒ lampstand of pure goldΒ before theΒ LordΒ regularly.

  • Care of the LampstandΒ
    • The people must bring pure olive oil for the lamp.
    • Aaron is to keep the lamp burning continually.

Bread for the Tabernacle

5Β β€œYou shall take fine flour and bake twelveΒ loaves from it; two tenths of an ephahΒ shall be in each loaf.Β 6Β And you shall set them in two piles, six in a pile,Β on the table of pure gold before theΒ Lord.Β 7Β And you shall put pure frankincense on each pile, that it may go with the bread as a memorial portion as a food offering to theΒ Lord.Β 8Β Every Sabbath day Aaron shall arrange it before theΒ LordΒ regularly; it is from the people of Israel as a covenant forever.Β 9Β AndΒ it shall be for Aaron and his sons, andΒ they shall eat it in a holy place, since it is for him a most holy portion out of theΒ Lord’s food offerings, a perpetual due.”

  • The ShowbreadΒ
    • Twelve loaves of bread are to be arranged in two rows on the table.
    • Replaced every Sabbath as a perpetual covenant.
    • Only Aaron and his sons may eat it in a holy place.

Punishment for Blasphemy

10Β Now an Israelite woman’s son, whose father was an Egyptian, went out among the people of Israel. And the Israelite woman’s son and a man of Israel fought in the camp,Β 11Β and the Israelite woman’s sonΒ blasphemed theΒ Name, and cursed. Then theyΒ brought him to Moses. His mother’s name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan.Β 12Β AndΒ they put him in custody,Β till the will of theΒ LordΒ should be clear to them.

13Β Then theΒ LordΒ spoke to Moses, saying,Β 14Β β€œBring out of the camp the one who cursed, and let all who heard himΒ lay their hands on his head, and let all the congregation stone him.Β 15Β And speak to the people of Israel, saying, Whoever curses his God shallΒ bear his sin.Β 16Β WhoeverΒ blasphemes the name of theΒ LordΒ shall surely be put to death. All the congregation shall stone him. The sojourner as well as the native, when he blasphemes the Name, shall be put to death.

  • The Incident of BlasphemyΒ
    • A man (son of an Israelite woman and Egyptian father) blasphemes the Name.
    • He is brought to Moses and placed in custody awaiting God’s judgment.
    • God says the man must be stoned by the community.
  • Anyone who blasphemes the Name of the Lord shall be put to death.

An Eye for an Eye

17Β β€œWhoever takes a human life shall surely be put to death.Β 18Β Whoever takes an animal’s life shall make it good, life for life.Β 19Β If anyone injures his neighbor,Β as he has done it shall be done to him,Β 20Β fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth; whatever injury he has given a person shall be given to him.Β 21Β Whoever kills an animal shall make it good,Β and whoever kills a person shall be put to death.Β 22Β You shall have theΒ same rule for the sojourner and for the native, for I am theΒ LordΒ your God.” 23Β So Moses spoke to the people of Israel, andΒ they brought out of the camp the one who had cursed and stoned him with stones. Thus the people of Israel did as theΒ LordΒ commanded Moses.

  • A life for a life, human or animal.
  • An injury for an injury
  • This might not need to be taken as literal punishment (if someone loses an eye due to your negligence you need not pluck out your own eye.) Instead, making sure the justice is proportionate to what happened.
