Love and Serve the Lord
โYou shall therefore love theย Lordย your God andย keep his charge, his statutes, his rules, and his commandments always.ย 2ย And consider today (since I am not speaking toย your children who have not known or seen it), consider the discipline of theย Lordย your God,ย his greatness,ย his mighty hand and his outstretched arm,ย 3ย his signs and his deeds that he did in Egypt to Pharaoh the king of Egypt and to all his land,ย 4ย and what he did to the army of Egypt, to their horses and to their chariots,ย how he made the water of the Red Sea flow over them as they pursued after you, and how theย Lordย has destroyed them to this day,ย 5ย andย what he did to you in the wilderness, until you came to this place,ย 6ย andย what he did to Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab, son of Reuben, how the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, with their households, their tents, and every living thing that followed them, in the midst of all Israel.ย 7ย For your eyes have seenย all the great work of theย Lordย that he did.
- Vv. 2-6 is one looong sentence!
- Israel is told to love the Lord, keep His commands, and remember what He did:
- His mighty acts and plagues in Egypt
- The Red Sea crossing
- The earth swallowing Dathan and Abiram (rebels with Korah)
- see Numbers 16
- His discipline and miracles during the wilderness years.
8ย โYou shall therefore keep the whole commandment that I command you today, that you mayย be strong, and go in and take possession of the land that you are going over to possess,ย 9ย andย that you may live long in the landย that theย Lordย swore to your fathers to give to them and to their offspring,ย a land flowing with milk and honey.ย 10ย For the land that you are entering to take possession of it is not like the land of Egypt, from which you have come, where you sowed your seed and irrigated it,ย like a garden of vegetables.ย 11ย But the land that you are going over to possess is a land of hills and valleys, which drinks water by the rain from heaven,ย 12ย a land that theย Lordย your God cares for.ย The eyes of theย Lordย your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.
- Israel will take possession of the land
- The land is cared for BY God
- Eden vibes
- In Egypt, farmers would irrigate their fields by manual labor (from the Nile) because it did not rain often. The Promised Land would rely on God’s rain.
13ย โAnd if you will indeed obey my commandments that I command you today,ย to love theย Lordย your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul,ย 14ย heย will give the rain for your land in its season,ย the early rain and the later rain, that you may gather in your grain and your wine and your oil.ย 15ย And he will give grass in your fields for your livestock, andย you shall eat and be full.ย 16ย Take careย lest your heart be deceived, and you turn aside andย serve other gods and worship them;ย 17ย thenย the anger of theย Lordย will be kindled against you, and heย will shut up the heavens, so that there will be no rain, and the land will yield no fruit, andย you will perish quickly off the good land that theย Lordย is giving you.
- If Israel obeys, God promises to send rain, blessing crops and livestock.
- If they turn to other gods, He will shut the heavens and the land will fail.
- Canaanite gods were thought to ‘control the weather’ and they are warned against following those gods.
18ย โYou shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, andย you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.ย 19ย You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.ย 20ย You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates,ย 21ย that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land that theย Lordย swore to your fathers to give them,ย as long as the heavens are above the earth.
- Israel must โbind these wordsโ on their hands and foreheads, teach them to their children, and write them on their homes\
- Tefillin are small black leather boxes with straps, worn during weekday morning prayers. One box is strapped to the arm (pointed toward the heart), and one is placed on the forehead (above the eyes). Each box contains scrolls of parchment with four Torah passages, including the Shema (Deut 6:4-9 and 11:13-21) and Exodus 13:1-16.
- Mezuzah is a small case fixed to the doorpost of Jewish homes (and often every room). Inside is a rolled parchment scroll with the Shema passages (Deut 6:4-9 and 11:13-21, and Exodus 13:1-10,11-21). When entering or leaving, many touch or kiss the mezuzah as a reminder of Godโs commands and presence. The case often has the Hebrew letter ืฉ (Shin) on it, standing forย Shaddaiย (โAlmightyโ).

ย 22ย For ifย you will be careful to do all this commandment that I command you to do, loving theย Lordย your God, walking in all his ways, andย holding fast to him,ย 23ย then theย Lordย will drive out all these nations before you, and you willย dispossess nations greater and mightier than you.ย 24ย Every place on which the sole of your foot treads shall be yours. Your territory shall beย from the wilderness to ย the Lebanon, and from the River, the river Euphrates, to the western sea.ย 25ย No one shall be able to stand against you. Theย Lordย your God will layย the fear of you and the dread of you on all the land that you shall tread,ย as he promised you.
- If they are careful to keep Godโs commands, God will give them strength to take the land. No one will stand against them, and their territory will be vastย
26ย โSee, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse:ย 27ย the blessing, if you obey the commandments of theย Lordย your God, which I command you today,ย 28ย andย the curse, if you do not obey the commandments of theย Lordย your God, but turn aside from the way that I am commanding you today,ย to go after other gods that you have not known.ย 29ย And when theย Lordย your God brings you into the land that you are entering to take possession of it, you shall setย the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal.ย 30ย Are they not beyond the Jordan, west of the road, toward the going down of the sun, in the land of the Canaanites who live in theย Arabah, opposite Gilgal, besideย the oakย of Moreh?ย 31ย For you areย to cross over the Jordan to go in to take possession of the land that theย Lordย your God is giving you. And when you possess it and live in it,ย 32ย you shall be carefulย to do all the statutes and the rules that I am setting before you today.
- Moses sets before them a choice: blessing for obedience, curse for disobedience.
- Verse 29 And when theย Lordย your God brings you into the land that you are entering to take possession of it, you shall setย the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal.
- These are two mountains near Shechem, standing opposite each other.
- When Israel entered the land, half of the tribes would stand on Gerizim and pronounce blessings, while the other half stood on Ebal to pronounce curses (Joshua 8:30-35).ย
- oak of Moreh: area where Abraham first entered Canaan and God told him, โTo your offspring I will give this landโย Genesis 12:6-7
