Leviticus 25-27 Redemption, Obedience, Vows

Thoughts

Leviticus 25

Sabbath year: Not only are Israelites commanded to have a weekly sabbath (7th day) but also a year based Sabbath (7th year). It shall be a rest for the land and all will be provided for – full dependence on God!

Year of Jubilee: After seven Sabbath years (49 years), the 50th year is the Year of Jubilee.

A ram’s horn (shofar) is blown on the Day of Atonement.

  • A ram’s horn (shofar) is blown on the Day of Atonement.
  • Liberty is proclaimed throughout the land: slaves go free and land returns to original families.
  • The land is not to be sown or harvested
  • Land prices are based on years remaining until the next Jubilee.

Not sure why ESV uses weeks of years when the word is clearly Sabbath (שַׁבְּΧͺΦΉΧͺ) (NASB uses Sabbath). In Daniel they use שָׁבֻגִים (weeks) when they say 70 weeks are decreed….

Redemption of Land: Land cannot be sold permanently as the land belongs to God! A close relative can redeem land for a poor person and if no one redeems it, it returns to the original family at Jubilee.

Redemption of Houses

  • Houses in walled cities can be redeemed within a year; otherwise, they stay with the buyer.
  • Houses in villages or open land are treated like fields and return in the Jubilee.
  • Levites always retain the right to redeem their houses and fields.

Kindness Towards the Poor: Help fellow Israelites who become poor and do not charge interest or profit.

Redemption of Israelite Slaves (all belong to God!)

  • If a fellow Israelite becomes poor and sells himself, he must not be treated as a slave. He should serve as a hired worker and be freed at Jubilee.
  • Foreigners may be permanent slaves, but not fellow Israelites.
  • If an Israelite is sold to a foreigner, a family member may redeem him.
Leviticus 26 Blessings and Punishments

God starts out this chapter reminding His people to worship Him only, keep the Sabbath, and
reverence the sanctuary.

There are so many reminders in this book to honor the Sabbath! This was/is so important to God.

Β Blessings for Obedience β€œIf you walk in My statutes and keep My commandments…”

  • Rain in its season, abundant harvests
  • Peace in the land, protection from enemies
  • Victory over foes
  • God’s presence
  • Freedom

Curses for Disobedience β€œBut if you will not listen to Me…”

  • First wave: Sudden terror, disease, defeat by enemies
  • Second wave: Drought, fruitless labor
  • Third wave: Wild beasts, childlessness, livestock loss
  • Fourth wave: War, plague, famine
  • Fifth wave: Devastation, siege, exile, desolation of land
  • Aftermath: The land enjoys its Sabbaths while the people waste away in foreign lands

I included table of symmetry of blessings and curses from https://enduringword.com/bible-commentary/leviticus-26/ by Mark Rooker

Promise of Restoration β€œBut if they confess their iniquity…”

  • God will remember His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob
  • He will not reject or destroy them
  • God’s covenant is eternal, even if the people are unfaithful
Leviticus 27

Valuation

People

  • Instructions for dedicating a person to the Lord by making a vow.
  • Monetary value is assigned based on age and gender (reflecting labor value, not worth).
  • If the person is too poor to pay, the priest sets a fair value.
AGEMALEFEMALE
0-45 shekels3 shekels
5-1920 shekels10 shekels
20-5950 shekels30 shekels
60+15 shekels10 shekels

Animals

  • Clean animals vowed to the Lord become holy and cannot be substituted.
  • If substitution is attempted, both animals become holy.
  • Unclean animals can be redeemed with an added fifth of their value.

Dedications

 Houses

  • A house vowed to the Lord is valued by the priest.
  • If redeemed, the owner must add one-fifth to its value.

 Land

  • Land dedicated to the Lord is valued based on the amount of seed it can produce.
  • If redeemed, one-fifth is added to the value.
  • Land returns to the original owner at the Year of Jubilee.
  • Land not owned by the person (purchased land) cannot be permanently dedicated.

You may not redeem things devoted to the Lord (firstborns etc)

Tithes: A tenth of all produce and livestock belongs to the Lord.Tithes can be redeemed by adding a fifth of their value. Livestock tithes are selected by passing under the rod (every 10 are marked)

Questions

Confused how the chapters are set up. There were no chapters or verses in scrolls correct?

Have people looked into the waves of disobedience throughout Bible mentioned in Leviticus 25?

Why does it say in Leviticus 26 if Israel is humble then God will remember covenant but then it goes on to say God will always remember even when they are unfaithful?

It seems that Leviticus 26 should be the end chapter

Application

These last three chapters highlight divine justice, redemption, and worship through giving. The blessings and punishments in chapter 26 especially stood out to me as they initially read as harsh. But they show how seriously God takes His covenant and how deeply He desires His people to be true to Him. Even with judgment, His mercy and faithfulness are never far behind. While these promises were specific to Israel, they reflect God’s timeless character: even when we stray, God offers redemption and restoration.
