Descendants of Reuben (vv. 1–10)

Notes on birthright: Reuben was Israel’s firstborn but lost the birthright; Judah prevailed for rulership; Joseph’s sons received the birthright.

Sons of Reuben: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, Carmi.

Line of Joel (Reubenite): Joel → Shemaiah → Gog → Shimei → Micah → Reaiah → Baal → Beerah (leader carried into exile by Tiglath-Pileser [Pul], king of Assyria).

Other Reubenite leaders/brethren: Jeiel, Zechariah; Joel→ Shema → Azaz → Bela

 Gad (vv. 11–17)

Territory: In Bashan as far as Salecah, opposite Reuben.

Chiefs in Bashan: Joel (chief), Shapham (second), Janai, Shaphat.

Kinsmen by fathers’ houses (seven): Michael, Meshullam, Sheba, Jorai, Jacan, Zia, Eber.

Genealogical chain: Buz → Jahdo → Jeshishai → Michael → Gilead → Jaroah → Huri → Abihail

Chief from another line: Ahi → Abdiel → Guni (chief of a fathers’ house).

Settlements: Gilead, Bashan and its towns, pasturelands of Sharon to their limits.

Joint forces of Reuben, Gad, and the Half-Tribe of Manasseh (vv. 18–22)

Military strength: 44,760 valiant men, able to bear shield and sword, shoot with the bow, and trained for war.

Opponents: Hagrites, Jetur, Naphish, Nodab.

They cried out to God in the battle; He granted their request because they trusted in Him; they prevailed.

Plunder captured: 50,000 camels, 250,000 sheep, 2,000 donkeys, and 100,000 captives.

Half-Tribe of Manasseh (vv. 23–26)

Territory & population: Lived from Bashan to Baal-Hermon, Senir, and Mount Hermon; numerous.

Heads of fathers’ houses: Epher, Ishi, Eliel, Azriel, Jeremiah, Hodaviah, Jahdiel.

Unfaithfulness & exile: They broke faith and followed the gods of the peoples; so Pul (Tiglath-Pileser) king of Assyria carried them away to Halah, Habor, Hara, and the river Gozan.

Line of Levi to Aaron’s Sons (vv. 1–15)

Levi → Gershon, Kohath, Merari

Aaron and his descendants offered sacrifices on the altar of burnt offering and the altar of incense, making atonement.

Settlements of the Levites (vv. 54–81)

Sons of Aaron (Kohathites) were given cities: Hebron, with pasturelands around it. The fields and villages of the city were given to Caleb.

Cities of refuge and priestly cities listed by tribe:

• From Judah, Simeon, Benjamin: Hebron, Libnah, Jattir, Eshtemoa, Hilen, Debir, Ashan, Juttah, Beth-shemesh, Gibeon, Geba, Alemeth, Anathoth (13 total).
• Kohathites (other families) received 10 cities from half-tribe of Manasseh.
• Gershonites received 13 cities from Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan.
• Merarites received 12 cities from Reuben, Gad, Zebulun.

Questions

Why are some names in the Levitical genealogy different or missing compared to the lists in Exodus and Numbers?

Why are Zebulun and Dan omitted?

Application

In 1 Chronicles 5–7, you see names of mighty warriors, kings, women builders, and priests, all recorded together. Some were farmers, some were daughters tucked into a long list of sons. Yet every one of them was included because they were part of God’s plan to keep His covenant line alive. A daughter like Sheerah (7:24), who built towns, is remembered just as much as the mighty 87,000 warriors of Issachar. Just as all these people kept the line moving towards Jesus, we also play a part in God’s larger story. Some roles are smaller than others, some are more visible, but all are essential. These ‘boring’ genealogies help us remember that God uses the ‘least’ and the ‘greatest’ for His plan.
