Hosea 2-4

Hosea 2

Israel’s Sin

Israel = unfaithful wife

  • Pursuing “lovers” linked to Baal worship
    • Credits Baal for grain, wine, oil (v.5)

God vs Idols

  • God blocks her path
  • She will “seek” but not find
  • She chases her lovers, but will come back to God
    • “She did not know that it was I who gave…”

Judgment

  • God will take away what He provided
  • Public shame
  • End of festivals
  • Punishment for “days of the Baals”

Restoration

  • “I will allure her”, comfort her
  • bring her to wilderness = place of renewal (like Exodus)
  • Transforms the Valley of Trouble to hope
  • “My Husband” (אִישִׁי ishi) vs “My Baal” (בַּעְלִי ba‘ali)

Covenant of Peace

  • Harmony with creation- transforms earth and creatures
  • Betrothal language: “in righteousness… steadfast love… faithfulness”

Full Reversal

  • Jezreel → blessing (good scattering of seed)
  • Lo-Ruhamah → mercy restored
  • Lo-Ammi → “You are my people”
Hosea 3

Short chapter:  1 And the Lord said to me, “Go again, love a woman who is loved by another man and is an adulteress, even as the Lord loves the children of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love cakes of raisins.” So I bought her for fifteen shekels of silver and a homer and a lethech[a] of barley. And I said to her, “You must dwell as mine for many days. You shall not play the whore, or belong to another man; so will I also be to you.” For the children of Israel shall dwell many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or pillar, without ephod or household gods. Afterward the children of Israel shall return and seek the Lord their God, and David their king, and they shall come in fear to the Lord and to his goodness in the latter days.

Hosea Redeems Gomer

  • “Go again, love a woman…”
  • Reflects God’s love for Israel despite ongoing unfaithfulness
  • Redemption price paid: 15 shekels + barley. Asks her to stay committed to him

Israel’s Future: No king, no sacrifice, no ephod

“Seek the LORD… and David their king” Israel will be restored

Hosea 4

Covenant lawsuit (רִיב riv)

  • God brings a charge against Israel
  • Charges:
    • No truth (אֱמֶת emet)
    • No steadfast love (חֶסֶד hesed)
    • No knowledge of God (דַּעַת אֱלֹהִים da‘at Elohim)
    • There is: “…swearing, lying, murder, stealing, and committing adultery; they break all bounds, and bloodshed follows bloodshed.”

Therefore: the land mourns

“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge”

Leaders feed on sin

  • “Like people, like priest”
  • They have forsaken the LORD
  • Idolatry linked with:
    • drunkenness
    • sexual immorality
  • Pagan worship practices corrupt the nation

Israel is already defiled and now Judah warned:

  • “Do not go to Gilgal… Beth-aven”
    • Centers of idolatry

“Ephraim is joined to idols; leave him alone” – God will not protect them

Application

Any of us can be like Israel and slowly give our hearts to lesser “lovers.” Look at what we put on a pedestal in our day to day lives. God always wants His sheep to come back to Him.
