Hosea 5

Priests, Kings, and People Rebuked

• “Snare at Mizpah… net spread on Tabor”
  • Places of leadership become places of entrapment

“I know Ephraim” nothing hidden from God

• “Spirit of whoredom” Hebrew: רוּחַ זְנוּנִים (ruaḥ zenunim)
• “They do not know the LORD” 

Pride testifies against them

• Judah also begins to stumble
• “They shall go with flocks… but not find Him”

Alarm of War

• Trumpets/blowing horn 
• multiple territories named

“Move the landmark” boundary injustice (Torah violation)

• Deuteronomy 19:14, 27:17, Proverbs 22:28

God’s response: “Like a moth… like dry rot” – Slow, internal decay

Ephraim turns to Assyria

• God becomes: “Like a lion” 

God withdraws “I will return again to my place”

“Until they acknowledge their guilt and seek my face”

Hosea 6

Israel/Hosea speak first: “Come let us return to the LORD”

• “After two days… third day raise us up” confidence that God will restore them
• “Let us know; let us press on to know the LORD”
• God’s coming: “as sure as the dawn… like the rain”

God speaks: “Your love is like a morning cloud”

• Fleeting, temporary

Words of prophets = instruments of judgment

“I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice”

• Jesus quoted this in Matthew 9:13, 12:7

“Like Adam they transgressed”

• Covenant violation from the beginning pattern
• Gilead: city of evildoers and bloodshed
• Priests: like robbers
• “Horrible thing in Israel”

When exiles return they will settle in Judah

Hosea 7

God continues to speak: “When I would heal Israel… iniquity is revealed”

• They think that God does not remember “But they do not consider that I remember all their evil.”

Oven Metaphor

• Hearts = oven burning with sin
• Leaders inflamed with evil
• No one calls on God
• Half-baked: inconsistent, compromised identity

“Gray hairs… he knows it not”- Slow decay, unnoticed

Ephraim a silly dove: naive, easily trapped

• Running between Egypt and Assyria

God redeemed but they rebelled

• They cry for grain/wine, not for God

God strengthened them and they plot evil

• “Like a deceitful bow” Unreliable, misdirected

Application

Sometimes we pursue God only when it benefits us.  Like Israel, we often trust in strategies or relationships instead of truly seeking the Lord, all while our spiritualness quietly deteriorates. God’s desire is not outward religion but steadfast love and a deep relationship with Him.
