Hosea 8

“Set the trumpet to your lips!” God commands Assyria to attack. 

• “Like an eagle against the house of the LORD”
• Israel claims: “My God, we know you” but the claim is empty

“They made kings, but not through me”

• Kings created ignoring God
• Idolatry: “Calf of Samaria”
  • “A craftsman made it; it is not God”

“They sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind”

• They sowed nothing, empty idols. But their judgment will be mighty.

Israel becomes: “a vessel in which no one delights”

• Alliances with Assyria: like “a wild donkey wandering alone”

Empty Religion

• Many altars leads to more sin, not less
• “I have written for him the great things of my law”. Torah ignored
• “They shall return to Egypt” (bondage)

Hosea 9

“like other peoples” → Israel acting like the nations 

• “loved a prostitute’s wages”: refers to idolatrous fertility payments to Baal

Reversal of Provision

• Threshing floor + winepress are symbols of covenant blessing (Deut 28:1-14)
• Now: grain and wine fail Covenant curses (Deut 28:38-40) begin to manifest

“They shall not remain… but Ephraim shall return to Egypt” – returning to bondage.

“bread of mourners”:

• Hebrew: לֶחֶם אוֹנִים (lechem ’onim) defiled food associated with death (Deut 26:14)
• Sacrifices: no longer accepted – bread is now only for survival.

• “appointed feast… day of the LORD”
  Without land/temple there will be no festivals. 

“The prophet is a fool…”

• Israel calls true prophets insane ( 2 Kings 9:11)
• “snare… hatred in the house of his God”

“Days of Gibeah”

• Reference: Judges 19–21
• One of Israel’s darkest moral episodes (rape, civil war)

“grapes in the wilderness… first fruit on the fig tree”. I

• Israel used to be faithful to God

Baal-Peor (Numbers 25)

• Turning point: idolatry and sexual immorality
• “became detestable”: They became like what they worshiped (Ps 115:8)

Reversal of Fruitfulness

“Ephraim’s glory shall fly away like a bird”

• Loss of:
  • children
  • fertility
  • future

“Give them a miscarrying womb…”

Gilgal 

• Once a place of covenant renewal (Josh 5)
• Now it is a center of corruption

“wanderers among the nations”

• Fulfillment of covenant curse (Deut 28:64-67)

Hosea 10

“luxuriant vine”:

•  Ps 80:8-11; Isaiah 5:1-7
• Israel prospered but multiplied altars instead of worship

Divided Heart

• Hebrew: חָלַק לֵב (ḥalaq lev)
  • smooth / divided / deceptive heart
• Not atheism but duplicity/ divided allegiance

“We have no king”

• king is meaningless without fear of the LORD

“false oaths… covenants”

• corruption in leadership

Total Collapse

• “Samaria’s king shall perish like a twig”
• “high places… destroyed”
• Sin has:
  • deep historical roots
  • And ongoing continuity

“trained heifer that loves to thresh”

• threshing = easier work (allowed to eat, Deut 25:4)
• But now: yoked → forced labor

“Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap steadfast love (חֶסֶד ḥesed)”

• “break up your fallow ground”:
  • Hebrew: נִיר (nir)
  • unplowed, hardened soil
• heart must be cultivated for repentance
• “it is time to seek the LORD”

“plowed iniquity… reaped injustice” inversion of 10:12 (Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap in mercy)

• “because you trusted in your own way”

Application

We often trust in what we build (systems) only to find that what we sow apart from God eventually collapses.  Like Israel, it’s possible to look outwardly fruitful while having a divided heart that slowly drifts from Him. God calls us to  seek Him and sow righteousness.
