Habakkuk 3

    • Possibly intense, emotional song

β€œO LORD, I have heard the report of you…”

  • Response to God’s revelation:

Zephaniah 1

Zephaniah (Χ¦Φ°Χ€Φ·Χ Φ°Χ™ΦΈΧ” – Tsephanyah) Meaning: β€œYHWH has hidden” or β€œYHWH treasures”

Unique among prophets: gives four generations of lineage (1:1)

  • Likely connects to Hezekiah

Time Period: During reign of Josiah (640–609 BC)

  • After: Assyrian dominance declining
  • Before: Babylon becomes dominant (late 600s BC)
  • Same timeline as
    • Jeremiah (early ministry)
    • Nahum (judgment on Nineveh)

Major Theme: β€œThe Day of the LORD” (יוֹם Χ™Φ°Χ”Χ•ΦΈΧ” – yom YHWH)

β€œI will utterly sweep away everything…”

  • Total De-creation language
  • Humans, animals, birds, fish
  • Genesis reversal

Target: Judah specifically

  • Baal worship
  • Astral worship
  • Syncretism: β€œthose who swear to the LORD and yet swear by Milcom” (a god of Ammon similar to Molech)
    • I learned a new word! Means not atheism but their loyalty is divided

Judgment on leadership

  • Commerce destroyed

Complacency

Judgment

Judgment Description

Wealth won’t save: β€œNeither their silver nor their gold…”

Zephaniah 2

β€œGather together… O shameless nation”

time is limited

β€œSeek the LORD… seek righteousness; seek humility”

  • Hebrew: Χ’Φ²Χ ΦΈΧ•ΦΈΧ” (anavah) = humility/meekness
  • Judgment is certain but individuals may be β€œhidden” (צ׀ן – root of Zephaniah’s name)

Judgment on the Nations

 Philistia (West)

  • Gaza, Ashkelon, Ashdod, Ekron
  • The coastal region judged
  • Future:Land given to remnant of Judah

 Moab & Ammon (East)

  • Sin: Pride, taunting Israel
  • Judgment compared to Sodom & Gomorrah
  • Remnant of Judah plunders them

β€œAll the lands… shall bow down to him”

 Cush (South)

  • Β β€œYou also… shall be slain”

Assyria / Nineveh (North)

  • The superpower falls
  • Make desolate

β€œI am, and there is no one else”

Application

Habakkuk 3 and Zephaniah 1-2 remind us that God is not passive. He will judge sin and confront HisΒ  people.Β
