Zephaniah 3
Jerusalem:
- โShe has notโฆโ 4x
- Obeyed God
- Received correction from God
- Trusted God
- Drawn near to God
Leadership corruption:
- Officials = roaring lions (devouring power)
- Judges = evening wolves (consume everything quickly)
- Prophets = reckless, treacherous
- Priests = profane what is holy
Contrast: Godโs righteousness
- YHWH is:
- Righteous
- Just
- Faithful daily
Ignored warnings
- Nations already judged as examples
- Jerusalem still refuses to learn
โWait for meโฆ for the day when I rise upโฆโ
- Global judgment gathering nations
- Fire of divine jealousy
Purified speech & worship
- โPure speechโ (ืฉึธืืคึธื ืึฐืจืึผืจึธื)
- Unified calling on YHWH
- Reversal of Babel (Gen 11)
Global gathering
- From beyond Cush (far nations)
- Worshippers brought to God
- No more arrogance in Godโs holy mountain
The remnant
- Humble (ืขึธื ึดื / ืึทึผื)
- Trust in the name of YHWH
- No lies, no deceit
โSing aloudโฆ shoutโฆ rejoiceโฆโ
- Judgment removed
- Enemies cast out
- โThe King of Israel, the LORD, is in your midstโ
โThe LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will saveโฆโ
- God not only savesโ
- He rejoices, quiets, and sings over His people
Final restoration
- Gather the outcast
- Remove shame
- Restore reputation among nations
- โI will make you renowned and praisedโฆโ
Haggai 1

From: https://www.foundationsforfreedom.net/References/OT/Prophets/Haggai/Haggai00.html
Haggai (ืึทืึทึผื โ แธคaggai) Meaning: โfestalโ / โmy feastโ
We now start the post-exilic prophets. He is speaking directly to returned exiles. He is mentioned in Ezra 5 and 6.
Time Period: 520 BC During reign of Darius I (not Danielโs Darius)
Word of the LORD through Haggai
- Directed to Zerubbabel (governor of Judah) & Joshua (high priest)
โIs it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled housesโฆ?โ
Problem:
- People neglect temple
- Focus on personal comfort
- They said it wasnโt time
โConsider your waysโ
- You sow much but harvest little
- Eat and drink but are never satisfied
- Clothe but not warm
- Earn wages but โput into a bag with holesโ
โโฆbuild the temple, that I may take pleasure in it and be glorified,โ says the LORD.
- There was drought, scarcity
- โBecause of my house that lies in ruinsโฆโ
Leaders and remnant obey. Work resumes on temple
โI am with you, declares the LORDโ
Haggai 2
In the seventh month, on the twenty-first of the month: God says new temple looks inferior to Solomonโs but not to fear.
โBe strongโฆ workโฆ for I am with youโ
Greater glory promised
- โThe latter gloryโฆ greater than the formerโ
- Heavens, earth, nations shaken
- โIn this place I will give peaceโ
- Quoted in Hebrews 12:26
twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, God says
- Holiness is NOT contagious
- Uncleanness IS contagious
- Peopleโs work = defiled
Past discipline
- Blight, mildew, hail
- Yet: โyou did not turn to meโ
โFrom this day on I will bless youโ
Godโs Sovereignty
- Thrones destroyed
- Heavens and earth shaken
- Nations overthrown
โI will take you, Zerubbabel My servant, the son of Shealtiel,โ says the LORD, โand will make you like a signet ring; for I have chosen you,โ says the LORD of hosts.
- Zerubbabel in ancestry line of Joseph (Matthew 1:12)ย
- Signet ring = authority, legitimacy
- Reversal of judgment on Jehoiachin (Jer 22:24)
Application
Zephaniah 3 and Haggai 1-2 remind us that God cares deeply about both our priorities and our hearts. He calls us to focus on Him, even when life is hard (or easy!).ย His presence is what brings true blessing and lasting glory.ย
