Luke 5

The First Disciples

  • By the lake of Gennesaret Jesus teaches from Simon Peter’s boat
  • He commands: “Put out into the deep”
  • Peter says they have been struggling, but eventually there is a miraculous catch of fish
  • Peter falls at Jesus’ knees and says “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man”
  • Jesus: “Do not be afraid”
    • “from now on you will be catching men”
  • They leave everything and follow Him

Jesus Cleanses a Leper 

  • Man full of leprosy begs to be made clean
  • Jesus touches him saying “I will; be clean”
  • Immediately the leprosy leaves
  • Jesus instructs:
    • tell no one
    • show yourself to priest
  • Crowds grow but Jesus often withdraws to pray

Jesus Heals a Paralytic 

  • Pharisees and teachers present
  • Men lower paralytic through roof
  • Jesus “Your sins are forgiven”
  • Religious leaders question  “Who can forgive sins but God?”
  • Jesus heals man to prove authority
    • “Rise, take up your bed and go home”
    • man walks
    • people glorify God

Jesus Calls Levi 

  • Calls Levi (Matthew)
  • Levi leaves everything and follows Him
  • There is a great feast with tax collectors
  • Pharisees complain that Jesus is eating with sinners
  • Jesus: “I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance”

    • Says fasting will come later

Luke 6

Lord of the Sabbath 

  • Disciples pick grain on Sabbath
  • Pharisees object
  • Jesus references David
    • “Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath”
  • He heals a man with withered hand on Sabbath
  • Leaders are filled with rage

Jesus prays all night and chooses twelve disciples

Blessings and Woes

Love Your Enemies 

  • Jesus commands to love enemies

Luke 7

Faith of a Centurion 

  • Roman centurion’s servant is sick
  • He sends message to Jesus saying feels unworthy for Jesus to come
    • Says: “Just say the word”
  • Jesus marvels at his faith and says it is greater than any in Israel
  • Servant is healed

Jesus Raises Widow’s Son 

  • In Nain (village in Galilee) Widow’s only son has died
  • Jesus:
    • has compassion
    • touches bier (frame to carry dead) 
    • commands: “Young man, arise”
  • Dead man sits up and begins to speak
  • People glorify God

Messengers from John the Baptist 

  • John the Baptist is in prison
  • Sends disciples to ask Jesus “Are you the one?”
  • Jesus points to miracles as evidence
    • Malachi 3:1 quoted
  • About John:
    • more than a prophet
    • greatest born of women
    • Yet least in kingdom is greater
  • People are divided in response (Pharisees rejected God’s purpose)
    • Jesus says they will always find something to criticize 

A Sinful Woman Forgiven 

  • Jesus at Simon the Pharisee’s house
  • Woman (known sinner):
    • weeps at His feet
    • anoints with ointment
  • Pharisee judges her internally 
  • Jesus sees this and gives parable:
    • two debtors forgiven
    • greater forgiveness shows greater love
  • Jesus forgives her sins
  • “Your faith has saved you; go in peace”

Application

We see in these passages how much God cares deeply for the broken and outcast. We also see that God breaks the mold of common expectations.
