Luke 8
Jesus travels preaching the kingdom with the twelve and women:
- Mary Magdalene (cured of 7 demons)
- Joanna (wife of Herod’s steward Chuza)
- Chuza would have been extremely important to Herod
- Susanna (never mentioned again, not much info on her)
- They provide for Him out of their means
Parable of the Sower
- Seed is word of God
- Four soils:
- path: taken by devil
- rocky: no root, falls away
- thorns: choked by cares
- good soil: bears fruit
A Lamp Under a Jar
- Light is meant to be seen
- Nothing hidden will stay hidden
- how you hear matters (more given to those who hear)
Jesus’ True Family
- Mother and brothers come but cannot get to him through crowd
- Jesus says His family are those who hear and do God’s word
Jesus Calms a Storm
- On the sea storm arises
- Jesus rebukes wind and waves
- Storm calms
- Disciples “Who then is this?”
Demon-Possessed Man (Legion)
- In region of Gerasenes man possessed by many demons:
- Wore no clothes, lived among tombs
- Demon named “Legion” Λεγιών (Legiṓn)
- Jesus casts them into pigs who ran into the water and drowned
- Man is healed
- People are afraid and ask Jesus to leave
- Man sent to town to tell what God has done
Jairus’ Daughter & Woman Healed
- Jairus asks help for dying daughter
- On the way a woman with bleeding touches Jesus’ garment and is instantly healed
- Jesus “Your faith has made you well”
- Jairus’ daughter reported dead
- Jesus “Do not fear; only believe” and raises her
Luke 9
Sending Out the Twelve
- Jesus gives disciples power over demons and diseases
- Sends them to:
- preach kingdom
- heal
- Instructions are to travel light and rely on hospitality
Herod’s Confusion
- Herod Antipas hears of Jesus
- Wonders is this John raised? Elijah? prophet?
Feeding the 5,000
- Crowd follows Jesus
- Disciples ask to send multitude away to find lodging
- They only had 5 loaves, 2 fish
- Jesus blesses, breaks, distributes the food
- Result all fed with 12 baskets left
Peter Confesses Christ
- Jesus asks “Who do you say I am?”
- Peter says “The Christ of God”
Jesus Foretells His Death
- Jesus says He must suffer, be rejected, killed, rise on the 3rd day
- Call to disciples:
- deny yourself
- take up cross daily
- follow Him
The Transfiguration
- On mountain Jesus’ appearance changed
- “face was altered”
- “his clothing became dazzling white”
- Appears with Moses and Elijah
- Voice from cloud: “This is my Son…listen to Him”
- Disciples keep silent
Healing a Boy with a Demon
- Disciples unable to cast demon out of a boy
- Jesus:
- “O faithless and twisted generation..”
- rebukes demon
- heals boy
Second Prediction of Death
- Jesus again speaks of His coming betrayal
- Disciples do not understand
Disciples argue who is the greatest
- Jesus:
- uses a child as example
- greatness = humility
Someone casting out demons in Jesus’ name
- Jesus says do not stop him
Rejected by Samaritans
- In Samaria a village rejects Jesus because He is going to Jerusalem (did not have good relationship)
- Disciples want judgment
- Jesus rebukes disciples
Cost of Following Jesus
- Three would-be followers
- Jesus:
- calls for total commitment
- no looking back
Luke 10
The Seventy-Two Sent Out
- Jesus appoints 72 others (some manuscripts say 70)
- Sends them:
- two by two
- ahead of Him into towns
- Instructions:
- “The harvest is plentiful, but laborers are few”
- pray for workers
- go as lambs among wolves
- carry no money, bag, or sandals
- When entering a house:
- say: “Peace be to this house”
- stay there, eat what is given
- Mission:
- heal the sick
- proclaim: “The kingdom of God has come near”
- If rejected:
- shake dust off feet
- judgment will be greater than Sodom
Woe to Unrepentant Cities
- Jesus pronounces woe on Chorazin and Bethsaida
- If miracles done in Tyre or Sidon, they would have repented
- Capernaum will be brought down
Return of the Seventy-Two
- The 72 return with joy
- They saw demons submit in Jesus’ name
- Jesus:
- “I saw Satan fall like lightning”
- gives them authority
- But greater joy is your names written in heaven
Jesus Rejoices in the Father’s Will
- Jesus rejoices in the Holy Spirit
- Truth will be revealed to “little children” and hidden from the wise
- Declares His unique relationship with the Father
- Blesses disciples and says they see what prophets longed to see
Parable of the Good Samaritan (
- A lawyer asks: “What must I do to inherit eternal life?”
- Jesus points to the Law:
- love God
- love neighbor
- Question: “Who is my neighbor?”
- Parable:
- man robbed and left half dead
- priest and Levite pass by
- Good Samaritan helps:
- shows compassion
- cares for him
- Jesus says “Go and do likewise”
Mary and Martha
- Jesus visits home of Martha and Mary of Bethany
- Martha is busy serving and distracted
- Mary instead sits at Jesus’ feet and listens
- Jesus:
- Martha anxious about many things
- But Mary chose the “better portion”
Application
Jesus shares a lot of wisdom in these chapters. We see who Jesus is (The Christ of God), who our neighbor is, and how we are met to share, not hide, the gospel.
