The Birth of Isaac
21Β TheΒ LordΒ visited Sarah as he had said, and theΒ LordΒ did to SarahΒ as he had promised.Β
- God keeps His promises, even if we have to wait! This is 25 years after God promised Abraham he would be a father of nations.
2Β And SarahΒ conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old ageΒ at the time of which God had spoken to him.Β 3Β Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore him,Β Isaac.Β 4Β And AbrahamΒ circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old,Β as God had commanded him.Β 5Β Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.Β 6Β And Sarah said,Β βGod has made laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh over me.βΒ
- Isaac (ΧΦ΄Χ¦Φ°ΧΦΈΧ§ Yitzchak) means “he laughs” or “laughter.” Abraham and Sarah initially laughed at the thought of having a child.
7Β And she said, βWho would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children?Β Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.β
God Protects Hagar and Ishmael
8Β And the child grew and was weaned. And Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.Β
- Did Ishmael get a great feast
9Β But SarahΒ saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham,Β laughing.Β
- Why was Ishmael laughing?
- Galatians 4:29 says Isaac was persecuted
10Β So she said to Abraham,Β βCast out this slave woman with her son, for the son of this slave woman shall not be heir with my son Isaac.βΒ 11Β And the thing was very displeasing to Abraham on account of his son.Β
- Whatever happened betwen the two boys greatly disturbed Abraham
12Β But God said to Abraham, βBe not displeased because of the boy and because of your slave woman. Whatever Sarah says to you, do as she tells you, forΒ through Isaac shall your offspring be named.Β 13Β And I will makeΒ a nation of the son of the slave woman also, because he is your offspring.βΒ 14Β So Abraham rose early in the morning and took bread and a skin of water and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, along with the child, and sent her away.
- Abraham was very wealthy, is this all he sent her off with?
And she departed and wandered in the wilderness ofΒ Beersheba.
- Was letting Hagar go merciful in a way? To get her away from the abuse she endured?
15Β When the water in the skin was gone, she put the child under one of the bushes.Β 16Β Then she went and sat down opposite him a good way off, about the distance of a bowshot, for she said, βLet me not look on the death of the child.β And as she sat opposite him, she lifted up her voice and wept.Β
- A bowshot is pretty far. We see in verse 20 he becomes an expert with the bow.
17Β And God heard the voice of the boy, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, βWhat troubles you, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is.Β 18Β Up! Lift up the boy, and hold him fast with your hand, for I will make him into a great nation.βΒ 19Β ThenΒ God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. And she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.Β 20Β And God was with the boy, and he grew up. He lived in the wildernessΒ and became an expert with the bow.Β
- God was not against Ishmael, He was with Ishmael.
21Β He lived in the wilderness of Paran, and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt.
- Genesis 25:9 say that both sons were at the burial of Abraham -does this mean they stayed in touch?
A Treaty with Abimelech
- So not to confuse ourselves, Genesis 21 may or may not refer to the same Abimelech introduced in Genesis 20. Later, in Genesis 26, Isaac also encounters a king named Abimelech. Abimelech ΧΦ²ΧΦ΄ΧΧΦΆΧΦΆΧΦ° can mean “my father is king” and be a title instead of a name.
22Β At that timeΒ Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his army said to Abraham,Β βGod is with you in all that you do.Β 23Β Now therefore swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me or with my descendants or with my posterity, butΒ as I have dealt kindly with you, so you will deal with me and with the land where you have sojourned.βΒ 24Β And Abraham said, βI will swear.β
- Summary: Abimelech realizes that God is with Abraham and asks for a covenant of peace.
- If this is the same Abimelech it is ironic that Abraham had deceived him in Genesis 20,and now Abimelech asks for a relationship built on truth.
25Β When Abraham reproved Abimelech about a well of water that Abimelech’s servantsΒ had seized,Β 26Β Abimelech said, βI do not know who has done this thing; you did not tell me, and I have not heard of it until today.βΒ 27Β So Abraham took sheep and oxen and gave them to Abimelech, and the two menΒ made a covenant.Β 28Β Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock apart.Β 29Β And Abimelech said to Abraham, βWhat is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs that you have set apart?βΒ 30Β He said, βThese seven ewe lambs you will take from my hand, that thisΒ may be a witness for me that I dug this well.βΒ
- Summary: Abraham agrees but raises a dispute over a well that Abimelech’s servants had taken. The two men settle the matter by making a covenant, and Abraham gives seven ewe lambs as proof that he dug the well.
- Water was VERY important in Canaan because of the lack of rain and rivers.
31Β ThereforeΒ that place was called Beersheba, Β because there both of them swore an oath.Β 32Β So they made a covenant at Beersheba.
- Beersheba (ΧΦ°ΦΌΧΦ΅Χ¨ Χ©ΦΆΧΧΦ·Χ’), means “Well of Seven” or “Well of the Oath”

“From Dan to Beersheba” becomes shorthand for all of Israel, (we see this phrase 9 times in the OT)
Then Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his army rose up and returned to the land of the Philistines.Β 33Β Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba andΒ called there on the name of theΒ Lord,Β the Everlasting God.Β 34Β And Abraham sojourned many days in the land of the Philistines.
