Exodus 40. The Tabernacle Erected

The Tabernacle Erected

  • Everything is created and now it is time to assemble to actually create ‘the Tabernacle’
  • “As the Lord had commanded Moses” is repeated 7 times
  • Leviticus gives us fuller account of priest duties and dedication

TheΒ LordΒ spoke to Moses, saying,Β 2Β β€œOn theΒ first day of the first month you shallΒ erect the tabernacle of the tent of meeting.Β

  • We are now ONE YEAR after Israel left Egypt!

3Β And you shall put in it the ark of the testimony, and you shallΒ screen the ark with the veil.Β 4Β AndΒ you shall bring in the table and arrange it, andΒ you shall bring in the lampstand and set up its lamps.Β 5Β And you shall put the golden altar for incense before the ark of the testimony, and set up the screen for the door of the tabernacle.Β 6Β You shall set the altar of burnt offering before the door of the tabernacle of the tent of meeting,Β 7Β and place the basin between the tent of meeting and the altar, and put water in it.Β 8Β And you shall set up the court all around, and hang up the screen for the gate of the court.

  • We have heard God’s commands for the items needed for the Tabernacle, the instructions how to build the Tabernacle, and now how to assemble the Tabernacle.

9Β β€œThen you shall take theΒ anointing oil and anoint the tabernacle and all that is in it, and consecrate it and all its furniture, so that it may become holy.Β 10Β You shall also anointΒ the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and consecrate the altar,Β so that the altar may become most holy.Β 11Β You shall also anoint the basin and its stand, and consecrate it.Β 12Β Then you shall bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance of the tent of meeting and shall wash them with waterΒ 13Β and put on Aaron the holy garments. And you shall anoint him and consecrate him, that he may serve me as priest.Β 14Β You shall bring his sons also and put coats on them,Β 15Β and anoint them, as you anointed their father, that they may serve me as priests. And their anointing shall admit them to aΒ perpetual priesthood throughout their generations.”

  • We see more of the anointing in Leviticus 8
  • Notice how the priests had to be washed. God establishes how sinful humanity can approach Him. This prepares us for Leviticus.

16Β This Moses did; according to all that theΒ LordΒ commanded him, so he did.Β 17Β In the first month in the second year, on the first day of the month,Β the tabernacle was erected.Β 18Β Moses erected the tabernacle. He laid its bases, and set up its frames, and put in its poles, and raised up its pillars.Β 19Β And he spread the tent over the tabernacle and put the covering of the tent over it, as theΒ LordΒ had commanded Moses.Β 20Β HeΒ took the testimony and put it into the ark, and put the poles on the ark and set the mercy seat above on the ark.Β 21Β And he brought the ark into the tabernacle andΒ set up the veil of the screen, and screenedΒ the ark of the testimony, as theΒ LordΒ had commanded Moses.Β 22Β He put the table in the tent of meeting, on the north side of the tabernacle, outside the veil,Β 23Β and arranged the bread on it before theΒ Lord, as theΒ LordΒ had commanded Moses.Β 24Β He put the lampstand in the tent of meeting, opposite the table on the south side of the tabernacle,Β 25Β and set up the lamps before theΒ Lord, as theΒ LordΒ had commanded Moses.Β 26Β He put the golden altar in the tent of meeting before the veil,Β 27Β and burned fragrant incense on it, as theΒ LordΒ had commanded Moses.Β 28Β He put in place the screen for the door of the tabernacle.Β 29Β And he set the altar of burnt offering at the entrance of the tabernacle of the tent of meeting, and offered on it the burnt offering and theΒ grain offering, as theΒ LordΒ had commanded Moses.Β 30Β He set the basin between the tent of meeting and the altar, and put water in it for washing,Β 31Β with which Moses andΒ Aaron and his sonsΒ washed their hands and their feet.Β 32Β When they went into the tent of meeting, and when they approached the altar, they washed, as theΒ LordΒ commanded Moses.Β 33Β And he erected the court around the tabernacle and the altar, and set up the screen of the gate of the court. SoΒ Moses finished the work.

The Glory of theΒ Lord

34Β ThenΒ the cloud covered the tent of meeting, andΒ the glory of theΒ LordΒ filled the tabernacle.Β 35Β And Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud settled on it, and the glory of theΒ LordΒ filled the tabernacle.Β

  • β€œMoses was not able to enter the tent of meeting…” This is fascinating because even Moses, who spoke with God β€œface to face” (Exodus 33:11), cannot simply walk into the Tabernacle when God’s glory fills it.

36Β Throughout all their journeys,Β whenever the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the people of Israel would set out.Β 37Β ButΒ if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not set out till the day that it was taken up.Β 38Β For the cloud of theΒ LordΒ was on the tabernacle by day, and fire was in it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel throughout all their journeys.

  • God officially moves in
  • THIS IS THE PAYOFF OF EXODUS!! Back in Exodus 25:8, God said, β€œAnd let them make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell in their midst.” Now it happens.
  • This is also a direct parallel with Mount Sinai. In Exodus 24:15-16, the cloud covers Sinai and the glory of YHWH is upon it.
  • John 1:14 will eventually say of Jesus: β€œAnd the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory…”
