Moses Commands Obedience
โAnd now, O Israel, listen toย the statutes and the rules that I am teaching you, and do them,ย that you may live, and go in and take possession of the land that theย Lord, the God of your fathers, is giving you.ย 2ย You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of theย Lordย your God that I command you.ย 3ย Your eyes have seen what theย Lordย didย at Baal-peor, for theย Lordย your God destroyed from among you all the men who followed the Baal of Peor.ย
- Israel committed sexual impurity and idolatry at Baal-peor (See Numbers 25)
- Do not add or take away from God’s commands
4ย But you who held fast to theย Lordย your God are all alive today.ย 5ย See, I have taught you statutes and rules, as theย Lordย my God commanded me, that you should do them in the land that you are entering to take possession of it.ย 6ย Keep them and do them, forย that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, โSurely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.โย 7ย Forย what great nation is there that hasย a god so near to it as theย Lordย our God is to us, whenever we call upon him?ย 8ย And what great nation is there, that has statutes and rules soย righteous as all this law that I set before you today?
- Moses gives a call to obedience of God’s rules.
- Obedience will bring possession of the land and make Israel wise among the nations.
- Verse 7 “Forย what great nation is there that hasย a god so near to it as theย Lordย our God is to us, whenever we call upon him?”
- They have practiced God’s rules in the wilderness for the past 40 years (well not always), but will they be able to carry on in the Promised Land?
9ย โOnly take care, andย keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life.ย Make them known to your children and your children’s childrenโย 10ย how onย the day that you stood before theย Lordย your God at Horeb, theย Lordย said to me,ย โGather the people to me, that I may let them hear my words,ย so that they may learn to fearย me all the days that they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children so.โย 11ย Andย you came near and stood at the foot of the mountain, whileย the mountain burned with fire to the heart of heaven, wrapped in darkness, cloud, and gloom.ย 12ย Thenย theย Lordย spoke to you out of the midst of the fire. You heard the sound of words,ย but saw no form;ย there was only a voice.ย 13ย And he declared to you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, that is,ย the Ten Commandments, and he wrote them on two tablets of stone.ย 14ย Andย theย Lordย commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and rules, that you might do them in the land that you are going over to possess.
- Moses recalls God meeting Israel at Horeb (Exodus 19)
- See point #2 on map below
- They saw no form of God, they only heard His voice at the time of giving the Ten Commandments and the Covenant.
- Remembering vs forgetting is a big theme in Dueteronomy.
- lest you forget the things… (v.9)
- lest they depart from your heart… (v.9)
- Make them known to your children adn your children’s children (v.9)
- teach their children (v.10)
Idolatry Forbidden
15ย โTherefore watch yourselves very carefully. Sinceย you saw no form on the day that theย Lordย spoke to you at Horeb out of the midst of the fire,ย 16ย bewareย lest you act corruptlyย by making a carved image for yourselves, in the form of any figure,ย the likeness of male or female,ย 17ย the likeness of any animal that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged bird that flies in the air,ย 18ย the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the water under the earth.ย 19ย And beware lest you raise your eyes to heaven, and when you seeย the sun and the moon and the stars,ย all the host of heaven, you be drawn away and bow down to them and serve them, things that theย Lordย your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven.ย
- God reminds Israel that although they cannot see a physical form of Him, they must not turn to physical idols, in any form (similar to Genesis 1 categories).
- Nothing male or female
- Nothing like an animal
- Nothing in the heavens
- NOTHING
- Verse 19 is a bit confusing “things that theย Lordย your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven.”
- This probably means that animals, heavenly bodies, etc. were given to humanity within the creation order, not to worship.
20ย But theย Lordย has taken you andย brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt,ย to be a people of his own inheritance, as you are this day.ย 21ย Furthermore,ย theย Lordย was angry with me because of you, and he swore that I should not cross the Jordan, and that I should not enter the good land that theย Lordย your God is giving you for an inheritance.ย 22ย For I must die in this land;ย I must not go over the Jordan. But you shall go over and take possession ofย that good land.ย 23ย Take care, lest you forget the covenant of theย Lordย your God, which he made with you, andย make a carved image, the form of anything that theย Lordย your God has forbidden you.ย 24ย Forย theย Lordย your God is a consuming fire,ย a jealous God.
- Moses reminds them he will not see the Promised Land (see Numbers 20) so they must obey even without him there.
- God is a consuming fire (Hebrews 12:29)
25ย โWhen you father children and children’s children, and have grown old in the land,ย and you act corruptly by making a carved image in the form of anything, andย by doing what is evil in the sight of theย Lordย your God, so as to provoke him to anger,ย
- Vv. 25- 31 start with the word “when”, showing Israel that when they disobey, the following will occur (vv.26-31)
- They do indeed occur, and this could be read as prophetic.
26ย Iย call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that you will soon utterly perish from the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess. You will not live long in it, but will be utterly destroyed.ย 27ย And theย Lordย will scatter you among the peoples,ย and you will be left few in number among the nations where theย Lordย will drive you.ย 28ย Andย there you will serve gods of wood and stone, the work of human hands,ย that neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.ย 29ย But from there you will seek theย Lordย your God and you will find him, if you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul.ย 30ย When you are in tribulation, and all these things come upon youย in the latter days, you will return to theย Lordย your God and obey his voice.ย 31ย For theย Lordย your God isย a merciful God.ย He will not leave you or destroy you or forget the covenant with your fathers that he swore to them.
- Idolatry will bring terrible things.
- They will perish (v. 26)
- scattering among nations (v. 27)
- This sadly will happen centuries later: the northern kingdom of Israel is conquered and scattered by Assyria (722/721 BC), and Judah is later conquered and exiled by Babylon (586 BC).
- If they seek the Lord, they will find Him.
The Lord Alone Is God
32ย โForย ask now of the days that are past, which were before you, since the day that God created man on the earth, and ask from one end of heaven to the other, whether such a great thing as this has ever happened or was ever heard of.ย 33ย Did any people ever hear the voice of a god speaking out of the midst of the fire, as you have heard, and still live?ย 34ย Or has any god ever attempted to go and take a nation for himself from the midst of another nation, by trials,ย by signs, by wonders, andย by war,ย by a mighty hand andย an outstretched arm, and by great deeds of terror, all of which theย Lordย your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?ย
- In v. 34 Moses lists 7 things God has done to deliver Israel
- trials
- signs
- wonders
- war
- mighty hand
- outstretched arm
- great deeds of terror
35ย To you it was shown,ย that you might know that theย Lordย is God;ย there is no other besides him.ย 36ย Out of heaven he let you hear his voice, that he might discipline you. And on earth he let you see his great fire, andย you heard his words out of the midst of the fire.ย 37ย And becauseย he loved your fathers and chose their offspring after them[c]ย and brought you out of Egyptย with his own presence, by his great power,ย 38ย driving out before you nations greater and mightier than you, to bring you in, to give you their land for an inheritance, as it is this day,ย 39ย know therefore today, and lay it to your heart, thatย theย Lordย is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath;ย there is no other.ย 40ย Therefore you shall keep his statutes and his commandments, which I command you today,ย that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land that theย Lordย your God is giving you for all time.โ
- Moses asks if any nation has ever heard God speak or seen such mighty acts. Godโs power and deliverance of Israel show that He alone is God. Israel must keep His commands.
Cities of Refuge
41ย Then Mosesย set apart three cities in the east beyond the Jordan,ย 42ย thatย the manslayer might flee there, anyone who kills his neighbor unintentionally, without being at enmity with him in time past; he may flee to one of these cities and save his life:ย 43ย Bezer in the wilderness on theย tableland for the Reubenites, Ramoth in Gilead for the Gadites, and Golan in Bashan for the Manassites.
- Reminder of the three cities of refuge east of the Jordan (they are not yet able to put the three cities on the other side)
- Bezer for Reuben
- Ramoth for Gad
- Golan in Bashan for Manasseh
- See Numbers 35
Introduction to the Law
44ย This is the law that Moses set before the people of Israel.ย 45ย These are the testimonies, the statutes, and the rules, which Moses spoke to the people of Israel when they came out of Egypt,ย 46ย beyond the Jordanย in the valley opposite Beth-peor, in the land of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon,ย whom Moses and the people of Israel defeated when they came out of Egypt.ย 47ย And they took possession of his land and the landย of Og, the king of Bashan, the two kings of the Amorites, who lived to the east beyond the Jordan;ย 48ย from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, as far as Mountย Sirionย (that is,ย Hermon),ย 49ย together with all the Arabah on the east side of the Jordan as far asย the Sea of the Arabah, under the slopes of Pisgah.
- This then concludes the first sermon. Now Moses will transition into the law-giving section (known as the second sermon)
