Deuteronomy 3. The Defeat of King Og

The Defeat of King Og

โ€œThen we turned and went up the way to Bashan. Andย Og the king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle atย Edrei.ย 2ย But theย Lordย said to me, โ€˜Do not fear him, for I have given him and all his people and his land into your hand. And you shall do to him as you did toย Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon.โ€™ย

  • Israel turns north and faces King Og at Edrei.
    • See map below (Northern points between markers 11 and 12)
  • God reassures Moses: โ€œDo not fear him, for I have given him into your hand.โ€ (v.2)

3ย So theย Lordย our God gave into our hand Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people,ย and we struck him down until he had no survivor left.ย 4ย And we took all his cities at that timeโ€”there was not a city that we did not take from themโ€”sixty cities,ย the whole region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan.ย 5ย All these were cities fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides very many unwalled villages.ย 6ย Andย we devoted them to destruction, ย as we did to Sihon the king of Heshbon, devoting to destruction everyย city, men, women, and children.ย 7ย But all the livestock and the spoil of the cities we took as our plunder.ย 8ย So we took the land at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, from the Valley of the Arnon to Mount Hermonย 9ย (the Sidonians callย Hermonย Sirion, while the Amorites call itย Senir),ย 10ย all the cities of theย tableland and all Gilead and all Bashan, as far asย Salecah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.ย 11ย (Forย only Og the king of Bashan was left of the remnant ofย the Rephaim. Behold, his bed was a bed of iron. Is it not inย Rabbah of the Ammonites? Nine cubits ย was its length, and four cubits its breadth, according to theย common cubit.)

  • Israel destroys Og and his people, leaving no survivors.
  • See Numbers 21
  • Og was the last of the Rephaim in this area, and his iron bed (over 13 feet long) is mentioned!
    • Verse 11: “Is it not inย Rabbah of the Ammonites?” It must be on display!

12ย โ€œWhen we took possession of this land at that time, I gave to the Reubenites and the Gadites the territory beginningย at Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and half the hill country of Gilead withย its cities.ย 13ย The rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, that is,ย all the region of Argob, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh. (All that portion of Bashan is called the land ofย Rephaim.ย 14ย Jair the Manassite took all the region of Argob, that is, Bashan, as far as the border ofย the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and called the villagesย after his own name, Havvoth-jair, as it is to this day.)ย 15ย To Machirย I gave Gilead,ย 16ย and to the Reubenitesย and the Gadites I gave the territory from Gilead as far as the Valley of the Arnon, with the middle of the valley as a border, as far over as the river Jabbok,ย the border of the Ammonites;ย 17ย the Arabah also, with the Jordan as the border, fromย Chinnereth as far asย the Sea of the Arabah,ย the Salt Sea, underย the slopes of Pisgah on the east.

  • Moses gives land east of the Jordan (from the defeat of Sihon and Og) to the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh.
  • See Numbers 32

18ย โ€œAnd I commanded you at that time, saying, โ€˜Theย Lordย your God has given you this land to possess.ย All your men of valor shall cross over armed before your brothers, the people of Israel.ย 19ย Only your wives, your little ones, and your livestockย (I know that you have much livestock) shall remain in the cities that I have given you,ย 20ย until theย Lordย gives rest to your brothers, as to you, and they also occupy the land that theย Lordย your God gives them beyond the Jordan. Then each of you may return to his possession which I have given you.โ€™ย 21ย And I commandedย Joshua at that time, โ€˜Your eyes have seen all that theย Lordย your God has done to these two kings. So will theย Lordย do to all the kingdoms into which you are crossing.ย 22ย You shall not fear them, for it isย theย Lordย your God who fights for you.โ€™

  • verse 19: “…and your livestockย (I know that you have much livestock)” makes me chuckle I don’t know why
  • Joshua is encouraged by Moses to be strong, as God will give victory over the nations.

Moses Forbidden to Enter the Land

23ย โ€œAnd I pleaded with theย Lordย at that time, saying,ย 24ย โ€˜O Lordย God, you have only begun to show your servantย your greatness and your mighty hand. Forย what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do such works and mighty acts as yours?ย 25ย Please let me go over and seeย the good land beyond the Jordan, that good hill country andย Lebanon.โ€™ย 26ย Butย theย Lordย was angry with me because of you and would not listen to me. And theย Lordย said to me,ย โ€˜Enough from you; do not speak to me of this matter again.ย 27ย Go up to the top of Pisgah and lift up your eyes westward and northward and southward and eastward, and look at it with your eyes, for you shall not go over this Jordan.ย 28ย Butย charge Joshua, and encourage and strengthen him, for he shall go over at the head of this people, and he shall put them in possession of the land that you shall see.โ€™ย 29ย So we remained inย the valley opposite Beth-peor.

  • Moses begs God to let him cross into the Promised Land. God denies the request but allows Moses to view the land from Mount Pisgah.
  • vs. 26 “And theย Lordย said to me,ย โ€˜Enough from you; do not speak to me of this matter again.” :(
  • What would have changed if Moses was let into the Promised Land?
