The Wilderness Years
โThen we turned and journeyed into the wilderness in the direction of the Red Sea,ย as theย Lordย told me. And for many days we traveled around Mount Seir.ย 2ย Then theย Lordย said to me,ย 3ย โYou have been traveling around this mountain countryย long enough.
- 40 years!
Turn northwardย 4ย and command the people, โYou are about to pass through the territory ofย your brothers, the people of Esau,ย who live in Seir; andย they will be afraid of you. So be very careful.ย 5ย Do not contend with them, for I will not give you any of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on, becauseย I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession.ย 6ย You shall purchase food from them with money, that you may eat, and you shall also buy water from them with money, that you may drink.ย 7ย For theย Lordย your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands.ย He knows your going through this great wilderness.ย These forty years theย Lordย your God has been with you. You have lacked nothing.โโย 8ย Soย we went on, away from our brothers, the people of Esau, who live in Seir, away fromย the Arabah road fromย Elath andย Ezion-geber.
- God commands them not to fight or take land from Edom (descendants of Esau) (see Numbers 20 where Edom does not let them through)
- They must buy food and water as they pass, because God has blessed them.
โAnd we turned and went in the direction of the wilderness of Moab.ย 9ย And theย Lordย said to me,ย โDo not harass Moab or contend with them in battle, for I will not give you any of their land for a possession, because I have givenย Ar toย the people of Lot for a possession.โย 10ย (The Emim formerly lived there,ย a people great and many, and tallย as the Anakim.ย 11ย Like the Anakim they are also counted asย Rephaim, but the Moabites call them Emim.ย
- God instructs them not to attack Moab (descendants of Lot).
- See Genesis 19
- Emim and Anakim! Theย Rephaimย (who Moabites called Emim which means โthe dreaded onesโ or โterrorsโ) were a group of large people similar to Nephilim from Genesis 6. The Anakim were the ones that the spies saw and who they defeat in Joshua.
12ย The Horites also lived in Seir formerly, but the people of Esau dispossessed them and destroyed them from before them and settled in their place,ย as Israel did to the land of their possession, which theย Lordย gave to them.)ย 13ย โNow rise up and go overย the brook Zered.โ So we went overย the brook Zered.ย 14ย And the time from our leavingย Kadesh-barnea until we crossedย the brook Zered was thirty-eight years,ย until the entire generation, that is, the men of war, had perished from the camp, as theย Lordย had sworn to them.ย 15ย For indeed the hand of theย Lordย was against them, to destroy them from the camp, until they had perished.
- Moses recounts how the Horites possessed Seir, but God gave it to the people of Esau, just like God will do for Israel.
16ย โSo as soon as all the men of war had perished and were dead from among the people,ย 17ย theย Lordย said to me,ย 18ย โToday you are to cross the border of Moab at Ar.ย 19ย And when you approach the territory of the people of Ammon,ย do not harass them or contend with them, for I will not give you any of the land of the people of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it toย the sons of Lot for a possession.โย
- God instructs them not to attack Ammon ( the other descendants of Lot).
20ย (It is also counted as a land ofย Rephaim. Rephaim formerly lived thereโbut the Ammonites call them Zamzummimโย 21ย a people great and many, and tall as the Anakim; but theย Lordย destroyed them before the Ammonites, ย and they dispossessed them and settled in their place,ย 22ย as he did for the people of Esau, who live in Seir, when he destroyedย the Horites before them and they dispossessed them and settled in their place even to this day.ย
- Helpful notes (note: the suffix “im” denotes plural words in Hebrew)
- Rephaim: A general term for giant peoples in Canaan and surrounding areas. Maybe descendants of Nephilim.
- Anakim: A specific giant clan, associated with Hebron.
- Emim: Another giant clan, east of the Dead Sea, defeated by Moab.
- Zamzummim: Giants near Ammon, defeated by the Ammonites.
- Notice how Moses mentions these giants twice (previously vv. 10-11). He shows the new generation that they have nothing to fear with God on their side.
23ย As forย the Avvim, who lived in villages as far asย Gaza,ย the Caphtorim, who came from Caphtor, destroyed them and settled in their place.)ย
- The Caphtorim are associated with the Philistines (Amos 9:7; Jeremiah 47:4).
24ย โRise up, set out on your journey andย go over the Valley of the Arnon. Behold, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king ofย Heshbon, and his land. Begin to take possession, andย contend with him in battle.ย 25ย This day I will begin to putย the dread and fear of you on the peoples who are under the whole heaven, who shall hear the report of you and shall tremble and be in anguish because of you.โ

The Defeat of King Sihon
26ย โSo I sent messengers from the wilderness ofย Kedemoth to Sihon the king ofย Heshbon,ย with words of peace, saying,ย 27ย โLet me pass through your land. I will go only by the road; I will turn aside neither to the right nor to the left.ย 28ย You shall sell me food for money, that I may eat, and give me water for money, that I may drink. Only let me pass through on foot,ย 29ย as the sons of Esau who live in Seir and the Moabites who live in Ar did for me, until I go over the Jordan into the land that theย Lordย our God is giving to us.โย 30ย Butย Sihon the king ofย Heshbon would not let us pass by him, for theย Lordย your Godย hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that he might give him into your hand, as he is this day.ย 31ย And theย Lordย said to me, โBehold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land over to you. Begin to take possession, that you may occupy his land.โย 32ย Thenย Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Jahaz.ย 33ย Andย theย Lordย our God gave him over to us, andย we defeated him and his sons and all his people.ย 34ย And we captured all his cities at that time and devoted to destructionย everyย city, men, women, and children. We left no survivors.ย 35ย Only the livestock we took as spoil for ourselves, with the plunder of the cities that we captured.ย
- God commands Israel to take Sihon’s land (#11 in map below) as the first conquest.
- Moses at first offers peace, but Sihon refuses so Israel defeats Sihon.
- See Numbers 21
36ย From Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and fromย the city that is in the valley, as far as Gilead, there was not a city too high for us.ย Theย Lordย our God gave all into our hands.ย 37ย Only to the land of the sons of Ammon you did not draw near, that is, to all the banks of the riverย Jabbok and the cities of the hill country, whatever theย Lordย our God had forbidden us.
- Nothing was to big for Israel with God on their side
